Endoscopy- Waived or not?

Recommended Posts

So my appointment with the surgeon has been moved up! I now meet with her next week, and I've already been given the green light by the nutritionist. My main concern is that I have not had the Endoscopy. However there is a possibility I won't need it? They use it to check for Barrett's Esophagus, but since I have NO issues with acid reflux/heartburn or anything like that, my nutritionist said they may most likely waive it. Has anyone proceeded without the endoscopy?

I have never heard of it. That's the area they are going to work in, it would behoove them to make sure everything is clean and healthy in there before they consider surgery. Maybe they will do it with your blood labs, chest Xrays etc? Be sure to find out if your surgeon requires it, I have friends going through 4 programs in Ohio, and they all have had to do it.-[emoji12][emoji13]

Trust your surgeon! He'll find/fix hernias while he's in there. That said, my surgeon did require every damn test imaginable, LOL.

My surgeon required barium x-rays of the upper GI. If they looked normal, you were good to go.

If you flunked (I flunked), you had to have an endoscopy and biopsy any gastritis legions for H. Pylori.

Was a piece of cake. No biggie at all.

Mine was waived because I had one in 2015 and that was recent enough for the surgeon.

I have to have a chest x-ray, and I hope to take care of that this week so they have the results prior to meeting with the surgeon. It was my hope to have EVERYTHING taken care of prior to the surgeon visit, but my PCP isn't too keep on the Endoscopy because she says I have no symptoms and insurance may not cover. So I am really hoping they waive it. As mentioned, I've never had any issues with heartburn/reflux or anything like that outside of pregnancy so I hope it might help.

However if they require it, it can only benefit me in the long rung (I just hope it doesn't take too long to get!). The more I think about it, the more attached to a potential surgery date in May I become...

I did not have an endoscopy, but my neighbor who had the same surgeon, and who had surgery just two months prior to me did have an endoscopy. So it not on varies between surgeon, but also between patients.

Thanks! I am really really hoping I don't need one, because they I can proceed directly to insurance approval/setting a date! The potential endoscopy (surgeon req), plus a chest x-ray (surgeon req) and sign off physical from PCP to clear for surgery (Insurance req) are the only remaining obstacles!

I do not need one even though I have a history of heart burn. I guess my age helps me

The endoscopy was a requirement for my surgery and am I glad I had it done. As it turned out they found a stomach ulcer yet I was not having any symptoms of an ulcer. I had to go on medicine to eliminate the ulcer before surgery because the surgeon said performing surgery would have been like cutting into an open sore. The medicine wiped out the ulcer in a month. Just my 2 cents worth.

Isn't that odd? I had one in 2015 and had to have another December 2017. Guess it just depends on the surgeon.

It might also depend on the results.
