Sabotage by loved ones

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else feel like their loved ones are trying to sabotage your weight loss? I want to believe that my DH doesn’t do it on purpose, but there are times that I wonder. Like when I buy fresh fish and instead of baking/grilling it, he fries it. Or when he brings home KFC (and he doesn’t really like KFC) for supper. He doesn’t do it often, he does encourage me and tells me I am doing great and I know that he loves me, but there are time that I wonder if he doesn’t want me to succeed.

Hi Mrs! When I first started eating "normal" foods after my post-op stages, I had a really hard time making my husband understand what I could and couldn't have anymore.

We still have a hard time planning our dinners out because 1. I can't eat as much as I used too, so don't make the WHOLE box of Pasta or whatever, and 2. I can't eat a lot of breads, its amazing how much we ate bread before!

My husband slips up too, but I don't think its sabotage... Its probably not what your husbands trying to do either. Its just hard to change our habits. Keep pounding it in his brain! Refuse to eat what he eats if its not good for you! I hope he will understand and be more aware of how his actions are affecting you!

My surgeon tells me to eat whatever I want as long as I am following ALL band rules.

1. Do not drink 20-30 minutes before or after a meal

2. Eat hard Protein first

3. Eat veggies second

4. Eat carbs last (bread, dessert, etc.)

5. Eat 3 meals a day only

6. DO NOT snack

As long as you follow these rules you should be able to eat whatever your family prepares/buys because by the time you get to the carbs, if you have followed steps 1-3, you will only be able to eat 1-2 bites because your pouch will be stuffed!

I don't think loved ones are trying to trash our efforts as much as they have seen us on a gazillion diets that never work. I think they believe the band is just the more expensive version of what isn't going to work so they don't play the game anymore.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
