Anyone worried that eating behaviors wont change after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!!

First time on Bariatric Pal, so glad to be here, so I have decided to do have the sleeve, I'm almost done with my classes required by Kaiser and its likely I will have surgery the early summer months. My problem is changing emotional eating and staying mindful that when I'm bored, sad, happy, I don't always need to eat, so since these behaviors must be addressed prior to surgery I have been receiving therapy to help tackle the issue. Anyone have the same issue? If so any ideas?

I don't have quite the same issue, but I definitely have the same fear.

Welcome to the group. Congrats on your upcoming surgery.

Stress, emotional and boredom eating takes work. Glad you found someone to work with on the issues. For me, surgery made things more manageable. I found new ways to cope with stress.

This is going to be an on-going challenge for me. Eating was my primary go to medicine to quash anxiety, pain, depression, etc. I have been and will continue to undergo therapy. This will be a time of discovery, learning, and adapting. The only piece of advice I have is the one that I am swallowing: be open to new ideas of living that don't include food.

food is my drug of choice and I am struggling with managing healthy choices. I want to eat junk food when I am bored, sad, depressed. It is very hard for me. Life after WLS is harder than I imagined it would be. I have hit a stall at 100 pounds lost and it is making me feel worse.

I have the same eating issues. I notice them more so after wls. I find myself wanting to eat all the time. I realize that a lot of the time it's because I just want something. It will be a life long struggle. I keep reminding myself that I only need food to survive and not to slowly kill myself. Instant gratification takes so long to correct. Good luck!

Yeah that's the trouble, food is just so tasty and seems harmless going down. We relate all of our holidays and social events to the food, it's a huge challenge to manage that.

If we could just all wrap up in a fuzzy blanket and do a group hug to make us feel better, I would do that for sure.

I have low self worth and have worked on it forever, some improvements but still a work in progress. Childhood was a b!iotch and getting past believing the people that you trusted and loved telling you how undeserving you are of pretty much anything takes a lifetime.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
