Hello everyone, today is my first day on a skim milk only diet. My surgeon uses this diet plan as the pre-op diet. I will be doing 20 oz of skim milk 3 times a day for the next 3 weeks. Has anyone else done this diet?[emoji2]

20 oz skim milk is basically a higher carb, flavorless Protein Drink.

Can you tell your surgeon you have a lactose issue? Or that milk is gross, LOL?

LOL! There is no easy way out of this one. I tried to weasel my way out of shoving those nasty Optifast drinks down my gullet. Yeah, that did not work out so well. :D

Maybe get some zero-calorie, sugar-free flavor syrups (such as Torani) to flavor it up so it's not just plain milk? Or the flavor drops (like Crystal Light) that are specifically made for milk -- I think Johnny Moo and Milk Magic are two brands. They're also zero-calorie and sugar-free and come in a lot of flavors.

I swear when they start practicing each surgeon picks their "pre-op" diet by throwing darts at a board. This diet makes absolutely no sense. It's not particularly high Protein. As far as I know you can't pre-load your body with Calcium. Just hilarious in general.

Just curious are you in the UK? I ask because that's where most of the references to the "milk diet" seem to come from.

I live on Vancouver, Wa.

Here is what the surgeons office emailed me when I asked why this diet

The surgeon’s choose to utilize the skim milk diet prior to bariatric surgery due to it’s effectiveness in shrinking the liver in a short period of time, the simplicity which promotes compliance and it’s low cost!

They have had great success with this plan over the years and feel the weight loss prior to surgery decreases the amount of surgical time, which is a benefit for the patient.

I can't argue the simplicity of the diet. The goal preop is generally do get you into ketosis which helps the liver shed the fat, most surgeons do this with a high Protein low carb diet. The approach here seems to just keep your calories so low you reach ketosis the old fashioned way.

That said if you have difficulty with this, but still want to comply, it may be easier to tolerate if you go with a fortified skim milk that are higher in protein and lower in lactose (sugar) like Skim-Plus or Fairlife fat free.

The final two days of my pre-op liquid diet also followed a similar plan. It was skimmed milk with milk powder to make a "high protein" milk where we had to get in about 90g of Protein in for each of those 2 days.
Like as been said here - every surgeon seems to have a different plan!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
