Mattymatt 491 Posted March 22, 2018 I read that Gastric Bypass patients lose an average of 75% of their excess body weight. At the time of surgery, I weighed 346 and my ideal body weight by BMI is approximately 190 pounds. So, that means I am carrying an excess weight of 156 pounds. 75% of 156 pounds is 117 pounds. So that means if I lost 75% of my excess weight, I would be a relatively svelt 229 pounds. Crunching the numbers is interesting. 229 seems like an impossibly long way off but I'm only going to take it day by day. 6 Creekimp13, Sosewsue61, clsumrall and 3 others reacted to this

It may feel like things are moving slow right now. You are going to look back after your first year and realize how quickly the weight change was for you. Hang on for the ride. 333-229 = 104 pounds. Not impossible! Can be done. 4 ProudGrammy, Mattymatt, irol888 and 1 other reacted to this

I try not to focus on the statistics because I also need to loose more than the average to be at a healthy BMI. I've seen some amazing success stories on here and I plan on being one of them. I know you will be too Mattymatt! 1 FluffyChix reacted to this

istytehcrawk 256 Posted March 23, 2018 Today, my surgeon said I can probably expect to lose at least 60-70% of my excess pre-surgery weight (though she also said it's common to regain a little after hitting the low and then stay at the slightly higher weight). I did the math, and if she's right, my end weight will be in the 200-225 range. I'm hoping I beat that, because I definitely want to end up quite a bit below 200 (which is still obese at a BMI of 36). Ideal weight for my height is about 120, and I doubt I'll get THAT low, but I'd like to get to about 150-160 so that I'm at least out of the obese range. 1 Mattymatt reacted to this

FluffyChix 17,415 Posted April 17, 2018 Matty the danger (IMHO) is in diet fatigue and recidivism. I truly believe from watching the vets here who are long-time maintainers, that some of them may have hit black ice momentarily, but regained traction quickly, going on to meet THEIR personal goals, not just some national average. The AMA uses statistics like this in order to determine a global "best practice" standard of care. But in my opinion "average" should not be anything any of us are aiming at for success, cuz average is well, kinda mediocre, isn't it? I want to be outstanding--not average. Remember, an average is a bell curve. There are outliers in each average--so there are people who did well-more than the mean average and those that didn't lose very much at all, in addition to the glut of people who fall at the belly of the curve. It takes those outliers to define the average. As long as you don't give up, and keep focused on your goal, you will make it. You're doing so well! 1 ProudGrammy reacted to this
