How to get enough fluid during the day

Recommended Posts

Hello, i am posting for my wife who had her gastric sleeve procedure on 2/28. She has been having alot of "buyers remorse" and feels like she was tricked into thinking this would be an easy lifestyle adjustment and i am doing all i can to help but it doesnt feel like enough some days. she just was able to start her pureed foods and has been having a really rough time with making sure she gets enough Fluid through out the day and the diet plan her surgeon gave is realllly confusing to us. the main issue we are having is Water, how on earth is she supposed to get enough water in during the day, i know she has to get at least 64 ounces of fluid but how does she fit eating in since shes not able to drink until 30 minutes after eating. her meals right now are between 20-32 oz of cream of rice thinned out with light soy milk to which i add unflavored Protein Powder, 2-3 2oz jars of gerber chicken, turkey, or ham, bout 8oz of instant mashed potato flakes thinned out with light soymilk and between 16-20 oz of chicken broth to which i also add the unflavored Protein powder. she also will eat between 5-10 1 oz no sugar popsicle's through out the day which seems to help with her nausea. she has started using a Blender Bottle to measure water intake but she says it feels like it takes her all day to consume her liquids and she doesnt know how to fit water into all of this due to the 30 minutes. i apologize if this is rambling but we welcome any advice or tips anyone has. thank you

I find that I do a lot better with my Fluid intake if I vary the type of fluid and temperature of it during the day. What works well for me is to have some different flavours of herbal tea and the warm Water allows me to sip much faster between meals. Experiment with ice cold and warm water too to see what works best.

It’s interesting how different all of our plans are! I can not count Protein Shakes toward my Water intake.

This is a big no-no, but I am drinking flavored (Crystal Light) Water out of a 24oz tumbler with a straw. I just find I drink more water if it's from a straw. So bizarre. I know. But it's helping me!

I’ve always drank from a straw since right after my surgery. My surgeon said it was fine to use a straw.

I was sleeved on the same day as your wife. This post-op diet has been very difficult!! She is NOT alone. But please tell her this is only temporary for her stomach to heal. Her diet, including Water consumption, will become a lot easier! This is the TOUGHEST part. Tell her to hang in there!!

I think you posted this same post elsewhere. It seems what she is eating is massively to much. Seems the amount are 10x what they should be.

I was sleeved on the same day as well. 1 month pots op on Wednesday! Tell her congratulations on coming this far. It is a hard adjustment as most of us have depended on food as comfort or socialization this whole time. I also have a very hard time with liquid intake as well as Protein intake. I find I can drink more if it’s ice cold. A lot of others can only stand room temp liquids. It varies for everyone. Sounds like she has a fantastic support person in you!! It’s definitely a complete lifestyle change. Tell her to keep trying different things, until she finds what works best for her sleeve and we wish her the best of luck!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
