Running/exercise again?

Recommended Posts

Hello. So happy you are all here!! I was just sleeved (revision from Lap Band) less than 1 week ago (3/15/18). In December 2016 I had hip replacement surgery. I am a runner and this put me out of commission and thus weight gain (40 lbs since then). With my new "bionic" hip I am ok to run again (Dr. not super happy....but I am). Now with this new surgery, when can I get back to running again? or truly any type of exercise for that matter?

I realize that the sleeve is a tool and so want to incorporate my running with it for maximum results.

Thank you in advance for any replies and/or suggestions!

I think the timeline for returning to exercise is individual. There is a huge difference in age and health status in this group, all sleevers are in a slightly different boat.

That being said, don't mess up your new joint (Or any of your originals) with too much running. Maybe try a little biking/hiking/swimming too?

Not trying to start a fiery debate about running. It can be a part of a healthy lifestyle, but it is also tough on your knees/hips.

Your Dr. Will release you for exercise. Walking first to heal from surgery

My doctor released me to swim at 3 weeks - once the incisions had healed. It was at 6 weeks that I was cleared for all other activities including running.

Although I didn't really feel like doing much until 3 months post op due to the low energy / low calories. I had enough energy to get through the work day but nothing else.

At 9 months back to my triathlon training - stronger than ever.

I was wondering about this! I would like to start exercising more but I just don't have much energy. I am 3 weeks post op. I'm looking forward to that increase in energy that everyone seems to enjoy post sleeve, but I think I'm just still in that recovery phase I guess. All I have energy for is my work day too! LOL

So glad to hear that you are back to your triathlon training...that is amazing!!! This is very inspiring.

i do kickboxing and my surgeon made me wait 2 months before i could go back. he encouraged walking and light weight lifting because kickboxing is too intense of cardio. good luck

Did your weight loss slow down after getting into kickboxing again?

My instructions were exercise as you get more comfortable. I walked a lot and hiked the first few weeks. I think it was probably week 6 when i got into more intense stuff (once the lifting restriction was lifted) - then I jumped right in.

Has anyone noticed that their resting heart rate after surgery is a lot less? Also, it takes some serious cardio exercise for my heart rate to increase for optimal impact.

I think the primary doctor concern post surgery is incision site damage and potenial hernia. Doctor gave me clearance to go back to non-weight lifting exercise at my first post op appointment (12 days out) and I've been back to hitting the cardio pretty hard since then (with no ill effects).

I would say if you feel up to running, try it and stop if you have any discomfort. Of course also check with your health care professional.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
