Type ONE Diabetics and Sleeves

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! Is anyone on here a type 1 diabetic? I am having surgery on 3/26 and since being on the pre op diet my blood sugars have dropped significantly which is great, however since I won't be eating after surgery or really even be able to drink much I am so concerned with dropping low and being unable to get my sugars back up. I have glucagons but I have already had to use one during the pre op diet and it didnt bring my sugars up as high as I had hoped. I have an endocrine appt on Friday 3/23 but I would love some advice from a fellow T1D. Any and all suggestions welcomed

I’m not a diabetic but in the hospital we have a glucose gel that we would have patients eat. It came in small one ounce tubes. They also make small chewable glucose tablets as well that you should keep with you. I should think both of these items would be appropriate post op.

You may need to also discuss lowering insulin doses with your endocrinologist while you are unable to eat and drink. I would certainly mention it if you find yourself dropping too low often.

Hopefully someone else comes along that is a type one diabetic to chime in.

Best of luck to you!

I would def consult on dropping your insulin dosage, esp quick acting before the shakes - one unit per carb grams is usually the recommended amount - correct? And your long acting/lantis may need adjusting - bring this up with your endo.

I am not a type1, but I have two type1 diabetic (now adult) children.

Do you have the monitor that alerts your phone when a low is coming on? My daughter has this and it's great especially for those 'predawn lows'. Check into it if you don't.
