Hi,

Yes, I'm a smoker and made an agreement with the surgeon I would quit for a month before surgery. Well, that was supposed to be Oct. 8th. I've been playing games with the patch, putting it on for 3 days, taking it off and smoking for a day or two. I really do not want to go under anesthesia actively smoking because it can cause complications.

I quit before surgery, but started up again about 2-3 weeks later. I have the new pill and want to quit, but it's scary. I started smoking very young, and I have tried to quit more times than I can count. I feel like this pill is my last chance and I don't want to fail again so I am putting if off to make sure that I really want it. That is just an excuse, I know, but I don't think that I can do it right now.

I was kinda bad I smoked until midnight the night before and even had one when i got home after surgery. It made me kinda sick smoking after so I cut back for a few days. I am finding i reach for a smoke instead of a snack now. One bad habit worsened another.

I smoked up until 3 days before my surgery, and what I realized is that its a helluva lot easier to get by not smoking with some liquid lortab in my system. LOL, jk, My doctor perscribed me welbutrin XL, and after taking it for about 2 weeks, the smell of smoke makes me feel like I might vomit.

He told me that welbutrin has been used for that sort of thing for a while now, and its honestly helped me leave the smokes behind. Plus, with the insurance, its a heck of a lot cheaper than the Patches or the gum. After 3 days, it DOES get easier. Just keep pushing, and if you mess up, remember the emotion that led you to it, forgive yourself, and stay focused.

I smoked for 41 years with the exception of a 2 year period I had quit, but started up again. I had been wanting to quit for some time because I developed such a bad cough. When I decided to have surgery I had to quit to pay for it! Good incentive! Anyway I have quit now for 11 days and honestly it has not been as hard as I thought it would. I will admit I use the gum, but I think more about not being able to have food than the smokes! (Pre-op diet). I guess I figured I was going to be miserable on the pre-op diet might as well go all out. I am so glad I quit now, during the pre-op tests I had to get a nuclear stress test and the blood flow to my heart is ok, but they think my heart is not pumping to full capacity, so I guess it's a good thing I quit. Plus I was nervous cause they kept saying if you smoke you can have complications, not sure what, but didn't want to take any chances. Getting banded Thurs. Nov. 1

Hi there,

I quit a few weeks ago with Chantix. I had tried everything in the past to quit and this is a miracle drug! The side effects can be tough- I am taking half the recommended dose and it works great.

Good Luck!!!

I completely agree with this statement (took out the side effects part because I didn't happen to have any). But for me this truly was a miracle drug. I quit over a year and a half ago using it and only took it for about 2 months. I have never once had a craving, even psychological, for a smoke. I can be around other smokers and can even have a few drinks and not be bothered at all. I would highly encourage anybody to try Chantix....its well worth the expense even if you have to pay cash for it, imho

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
