apositivelife4me 189 Posted March 21, 2018 (edited) This is where they run a camera down your throat to look around at your organs and your stomach. I was wondering if others are having this done too? Edited March 21, 2018 by apositivelife4me spelling
Apple203 1,314 Posted March 21, 2018 I had an endoscopy -- is this the same thing?
apositivelife4me 189 Posted March 21, 2018 I think so. Did you have it two weeks prior to surgery? Did it make you gag? I have not had it done yet. They give you anesthesia.
Creekimp13 5,840 Posted March 21, 2018 (edited) You get a short acting "twilight" medication...not true anesthesia, but sort of. You probably won't remember anything about the procedure cause it affects memory. My doc routinely does barium x-rays....but if you flunk, you have to do an upper endoscopy. I flunked...so I got the endoscopy. I do have a couple of vague memories of the nurses patting me and telling me I was doing great...and kinda gagging on the tube....very vague. (and I'm a weirdo and made an effort to remember anything I could) Took all of twenty minutes...and I was awake and ready to go have lunch in within a half an hour. You do need a driver that day. I had some gastritis and they took a biopsy of it to make sure I didn't have the bacteria that causes ulcers. If you happen to have that...it's a much better idea to treat it before surgery than after. I also got some medication to treat the gastritis. Had my surgery about 5 weeks after my endoscopy. Apple203 1,314 Posted March 21, 2018 (edited) My experience was like CreekImp's -- very quick, painless, and went out to Breakfast afterwards! I had mine a few months before surgery, but then my pre-op period was the full 6 months. Edited March 21, 2018 by Apple203

FluffyChix 17,418 Posted March 21, 2018 (edited) I had mine at the beginning of the journey. She likes to weed people out early. Then I also had one during surgery. I presume she either goes in prior to surgery to make sure things look good, and/or she does it after surgery to check out the interior of the new anatomy. Ashley RN 10 Posted March 21, 2018 Don’t worry it’s super easy. They usually give you propofol which is an anesthesia drug in your IV. You don’t remember a thing but wake up like you had the best nap ever. The worst part is probably getting the IV at the beginning. Your throat might be a little scratchy but that usually goes away in an hour. The whole thing takes less than an hour but you will need someone with you to drive you home. My doctor did mine during my surgery because there wasn’t time before.

What do you mean by "weed" people out early?
frust8 963 Posted March 21, 2018 Make sure you're committed enough by going through such testing. I have been seeking mine since August 2015 I would do anything ,personally, short of selling a kidney, which I could spare since I was born with 3, to receive my surgery. Perhaps I'm so committed I need to be committed to the loony bin. Just put me in the padded area with all the people whose insurances are jerking them around.[emoji26] Although that's not my exact problem I still feel a certain kinship with them.My EGD was last December 2017, done by my gastroenterologist instead of a bariatric or general surgeon. I had absolutely no problems including no sore throat or other discomforts afterwards. Found out I have gastritis in addition to Hector my itty bitty ulcer in the antrum. I am hopeful my future surgery will make him stay asleep and that the gastritis will get better. I'm on Dexilant 60mg every morning. Is it helping? Well the day I missed a dose I was pretty miserable.[emoji26] And I don't have h. pylori so Hector came from excessive NASID usage.Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

I hope all goes well for you.
