Hi y’all! My name is Veronica and I’m 20. I have been overweight since I was 5 years old and I’ve just been living with it. I’ve done Weight Watchers, Adkins, calorie counting, you name it! No luck so far. I recently returned from vacation and I realized on that trip how frustrated I got any time someone pointed a camera at me and after seeing the pictures, I am officially DONE living like this. I jumped on the internet, stumbled upon VSG, and have been researching it nonstop for days. My question is.... has anyone ever been told they are too obese to have VSG? I’m scared that I’ll go to the doctor and they’ll tell me I have to lose 100lbs first or something. PLEASE HELP!

How what’s your current weight now? I know depending on your insurance they will have you do pre op testing and see a nutritionist a few times but mine never had any requirements just not to gain weight.

Hey Audrey!

I haven’t been on a scale in a while but I would guess my current weight is around 460. Obviously I am wayyyyy too young to be living like this and that’s why I really want gastric sleeve. The heaviest person I’ve seen in any forum is like 350 and that’s what concerns me. I’m scared I’ll show up and they’ll turn me down.

I've only seen people turned down if they are high risk patients, meaning they have health issues that will make the surgery dangerous. Not sure exactly what those conditions would be. All weight loss surgery programs require you to lose weight prior to surgery. I know at least two reasons for this - 1) To shrink your fat liver. Surgery is extremely difficult if your liver is too big. It blocks your stomach and makes surgery virtually impossible to do safely. Losing weight shrinks your liver. 2) To train you to eat better for after surgery. I'm not sure where you live or if you have cable, but there is a very popular show in the US called "My 600lb Life". Surgeries are performed on very obese people safely. You will have to lose weight to be approved for the surgery, but the amount will depend on your doctor. Don't worry. Thousands have done it and you will too!

You should definitely make an appointment and have a discussion with a surgeon. He or she will be able to answer questions and advise you on which surgery is recommended. However, I know I've seen posts on here of people with weight in your range who have had the sleeve.

For what it's worth, my doctor didn't set a specific goal for weight loss for me before surgery--just wanted me to lose some, which I did.

Good luck!

Hello!
Like you I haven't seen many people above 350 on here either. I'm having vsg surgery today and my SW was 463. The best thing to do is go in for a consultation. Get the ball rolling. They'll tell you everything you need to know and answer any questions. I was told I needed to be below 450 by the time of surgery. Im down 20lbs from the low fat low carb diet but every Dr is different. Good luck to you!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
