I’ve been alcohol free for a year now. I’m planning on meeting up with some friends after work tomorrow and I plan on having a drink. I’ve read other posts about drinking after surgery but don’t remember seeing where anyone said how fast or hard the alcohol will hit you. I don’t plan on driving at all but I also don’t want to look like a blathering idiot after half a glass of wine. Any info someone can pass on from their experiences I would greatly appreciate.

If you had a bypass its very very different.

But with a sleeve I honestly notice absolutely no difference. And im not a big drinker (handful of times a year)

Hell I went out for drinks about 6 weeks after my surgery (it was the holidays) and two drinks did absolutely nothing for me.

The biggest difference I notice is I dont enjoy most of the drinks I would have enjoyed preoperatively, due to changes in taste

I would be completely shocked if half a glass, let alone a whole glass of wine got you anything more than tipsy (unless were talking one of those gigantic glasses filled way up)

Mhy12784 No I only intend on drinking a normal size glass. Lol. I had the sleeve so I was thinking it wouldn’t affect me like the people with a bypass has. Honestly the only think I’ve noticed a difference with is sugar. I don’t have the dumping when I eat some but I do feel kinda blah.

i can have maybe 1 glass of wine and then i feel completely full. i can’t even drink enough to feel drunk. definitely tastes different. i think beer is disgusting and i used to love it. just listen to your body and don’t let people try to pressure you into drinking more than you’re comfortable with.

No real issues for me. I believe 90% of alcohol is metabolized in the intestine, not the stomach. I think you will find you will not physically be able to drink as much, which limits how easily you can get drunk. I have had beer, wine, mixed drinks and shots all with no issues or perceivable difference (although with an 'empty' stomach I do think I feel the effects a bit sooner). Enjoy.

Main thing for me is that the 71 pound weight loss i had must have made me get intoxicated with much less. It takes 2-3 drinks now and i am feeling pretty good.

i drank 4 strong IPAs over a 3 hours period and was hammered.

I drink a glass or two of wine from time to time. I've found though that red wine gives me a histamine interaction now, meaning I wake up in the middle of the night with both sinuses blocked, completely unable to breathe through my nose.

It turns out this may have been something I had before but when I weighed an extra 135 pounds, it took more red wine to set it off, so it didn't come up as easily.

White is still fine for me though.

The other thing I've found is that I have to treat the no drinking liquids right before or after eating rule a lot more seriously if the liquid in question is wine. No glass of wine with dinner for me.

This!

The 100 lb weight loss has much more of an effect than the sleeve surgery. I drank 3 weeks post op, daily for a week. I found I had no taste for it, and therefore drank slowly and didn't finish my drinks. I never even felt buzzed. But I have a high tolerance, and I'm sure my weight is a big part of that. What it did do is sabotage my wight loss for that week. With the alcohol I averaged 700 cals, but managed to gain 2 lbs that week. So the weight gain has made me swear off drinking until I get near my goal!

I recently tried a drink after 3.5 months and it had WAY more impact than pre surgery. I don’t know if it was extra strong, having lost 70 lbs or the sleeve, but it had the effect of maybe 5 drinks pre sleeve.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
