Surgery date April 19 -- Bypass

Who's my surgery twin??? I got approved on Friday 03/08/2018 [emoji4] I found out before my surgeons office because I called my insurance even though it had only been 3 days that day since the authorization request was put in. To my surprise they had already made a decision by day 2! On 03/12/2018 it was scheduled for April 19. Wow.. I was so excited! Now ofcourse naturally I am also a tad bit nervous for after surgery body reactions. Back in 08/2015 I was 418 lbs found out i am diabetic got on metformin and I decided to lose weight, I lost 138 lbs in a little over a year and my A1C dropped to 5.2. I kept the weight off but by 05/2017 I had gained back around 50 lbs. My August 2017 I decided ok it's time to get the surgery, it all worked out because my insurance requires 3 years of medical documentation, 2 of which have to be documented that I was trying to lose weight which I met this requirement since I didn't start going to the doctor until 2015. I had to do 6 months of monthly weigh ins (really 7 since the first one doesn't count and yeah I know some people wait a year!) But this weigh in process actually got me to the 3 years worth of documentation since my last weigh in wasn't until February 2018. I'm down 111 lbs now so although I haven't been able to get back down 138 lbs I'm back on track but March 17 is my birthday so I'm going to eat some cake while I can! Liver shrinking diet starts on 04/04/2018 [emoji3] I know after surgery sweets and fatty foods won't be a good idea due to dumping syndrome so I'll enjoy my cake for my 28th birthday [emoji322]

Congratulations on doing what you've been able to do on your own! I had Gastric Bypass and I think most of my nerves and fears were pretty much unfounded. I went into it expecting the worst so that everyday would be a pleasant surprise. As a diabetic, you made the right decision to go the bypass route. I am a diabetic myself and even just 4 days post-op, my numbers are so good that I don't need Metformin anymore. In just a few short days, I rid myself of Lantus (long-acting insulin), Victoza, and Metformin. As my weight continues to fall, I am hoping not to have to take Losartin for blood pressure but I have no side effects with it so either way.

Also, the surgical technology is amazing nowadays. The laprascopic incisions are all basically done by robotics. The cuts are precise and the incisions are very clean. I compare this to when I had laprascopic surgery to remove my gall bladder in 2002. The incisions were still done by hand then and I had all kinds of drainage. In fact, it took weeks for the butterfly bandages to come off. These days, they use steri-strips or glue. My surgeon used basic steri-strips and three of them fell off yesterday at 3 days post-op.

In holding pattern until April 25th when I meet with psychologist at OSU, then I should know more. Maybe earlyish May, it depends on whether my credits from previous program all transfer or whether they will require anything else. I'd like that to hit someone or something, I'm really a peaceable person but I loathe inaction. I want,to move ahead and go to surgery.[emoji13]

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
