Water? Nope. Applesauce? Nope. Jell-o? Nope. Help!!

So i had my gastric sleeve on 3/14, and even though it's barely been over a day, I'm really anxious at how little food and liquid I can take it. I've nearly vomited twice (heaved and coughed, but nothing came out), and my nausea when i drink anything is overwhelming. I've also not been able to take more then 3-4 small bites of any food I've been given. I read somewhere that lack of Protein makes you more nauseated, so I had as much of a Protein Shake as I could handle and it seems like it helped a bit. Anyway, did everyone else go through something similar? I'm scared something is wrong.

It may not be the sleeve. A lot of people get nauseous after anesthesia. I'd give it more time before getting worried.

Kay, stick to Water only right now, what ever you can handle, but no more. forget Protein forget food none of those matter this early. you will be fine for weeks even if you dont eat a bite. The fliuds are a different story but dont try to hit your water target so fast. work up to it and do not worry about anything else. You are going to be fine. let your body heal the rest will come with time.

and drop into the sleeve forum there some great people here and you will get a lot of support during your journey

We were not allowed to eat any food the first week. Clear Liquids and Protein Drinks only.

We were told not to drink more than 4 ounces per hour.

One ounce per 15 minutes was the target. That tiny little medicine cup in about 12 teenie sips.

Yep, it's hard...and all you're doing...all day long..is sipping and sipping and sipping....but if you do these tiny sips all day, it's tolerable, and you can get a lot in.

Avoid long naps...you lose hours of the day you need to be drinking.

Start drinking as soon as you wake up, keep drinking until you get in bed at night. 4 ounces per hour. Measure and record everything....it will keep you out of the emergency room.

Call your surgeon's office about anti nausea medication if you're not already taking it.

Don't eat food.

Alternate by the hour....4 ounces of Water one hour, 4 ounces of Protein Shake the next. one ounce every 15 minutes.

Do your best. If you start falling behind....phone your surgeon's office. It's a lot easier to go to their office to have a bag of fluids run into you, than end up at the ER at night.

I would also recommend calling your surgeon's office. I was given a scopolamine patch to prevent nausea, and it worked wonders. I wasn't discharged until they were sure I wasn't nauseous.

Also: hugs!! It sounds like a stressful couple of days. It really does get better!

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'm relieved I'm not the only one who had this issue. Looking back at my workbook I got from my dietician, it seemed like from day 2 on they expected me to drink 64 oz (including two premier shakes), then eat 2 oz 3 times a day right away. I can't even eat half that. I'll focus on getting the Water in as much as possible though.

I think you need something for nausea before you end up becoming dehydrated!! Like others have mentioned, one ounce of clear liquids every fifteen minutes takes you to 64 ounces in 16 hours. I tried ramping up to one ounce every 12 minutes (~13 hours) and I'm not there yet.

To @Creekimp13's point, I wouldn't even consider solid or semi solid food until 3 weeks post op. In my program, you do a full week of clear liquids, a week of full liquids, and then pureed foods, soft foods, and then regular diet. If you have the sleeve, then the full liquid stage is actually 2 weeks. Sleeve patients have a longer staple line and require longer healing times.

My program is a little different. It is two days of clears and then 2 weeks of full. This was for both sleeve and bypass patients.

That's exactly what mine recommends. But even 2oz of full liquids is too much for me. I'm hoping it'll calm down within the next few days.

I think it will get better for you! It's all about time. Remember, everyone's body is very different. Mine is just really weird. I expected to be suffering like you wouldn't believe, and aside from the normal pain, I am doing okay. Yes, definitely give it a few days to get into the rhythm.

I was on clear liquids for 2 weeks. Now I’m on purée for 2 weeks. Then soft foods for 2 months! This is the plan for all of the surgeons in my area! Go slow! It takes time to heal. Good luck.

But in your original post you say that you are eating food? Are you eating food?

Sorry for the confusion; in my mind, "applesauce" and "jell-o" are still "foods", even though I know they're full/clear liquids. I'm definitely not trying to eat anything solid or semi-solid.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
