Gastric Sleeve & Hiatal Hernia Repair

Recommended Posts

So I had my surgery on Monday March 12. Everything went well except I had to have a hernia repaired. The pain was intense the first few days but I am feeling better today. Has anyone else had to have hernia repair as well? If so any advice or any barriers.

My surgeon told me he was going to repair my hiatal hernia during the sleeve gastrectomy. I really can't tell that anything has been done either way. LOL Felt like crap first three days, but each day got better and better. Some days I still don't have energy and I feel weak. I also hit a road block with major cramping during my second week, but I took some milk of magnesia twice a day for two days and I finally felt better.

You are not breathing until then? You may be majorily blue in the face from lack of oxygen before that time. If you mean you won't be able to relax until it's all over that I understand.

I had hernia and sleeve done. Had a nasty pain in my shoulder that felt like a pinched nerve that I'm told is related to the hernia.....but it was just bothersome, not debilitating. I walked like crazy right after surgery and escaped the hospital the next day. Took minimal pain meds and felt terrific. Regular Tylenol at home for a couple day...that's it. Was back to walking 5 miles a day within a couple days.

I had both done on March 9. The last 3 days, I have had really intense/painful stomach spasms. I mean I felt like there was a squirrel or gerbil that they put in my stomach that was trying to jump out. The nurse said I was probably producing excess stomach acid still and my sensitive new stomach was reacting to it. She has told me to take my Prilosec(Omeprazole) 40mg capsules. I am finally feeling pretty good today, day 6 after surgery. Don't know if it is time or the meds. I certainly wasn't experiencing any burning that I would associate with the acid. But odds are if you have a hiatal hernia, you are on this type of medicine. I would not recommend stopping it after surgery as I did.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
