Anyone NOT recommend WLS?

Recommended Posts

I am in the research phase. I have found RESOUNDING positive reviews, and even someone I know that had tremendous complications does not regret the surgery and would do it again. I am excited but I also want to look at other view points - who isn’t happy with this? Is there a source out there for people unhappy with the results, people who have lots of regain? I don’t want to talk myself out of this but I certainly want to look at all angles.

I’m also concerned about the high rates of depression after surgery, and the high divorce rates in the first 2 years. Those both concern me.

A very smart doctor said regarding divorce after WLS “ it makes a good marriage better & a bad marriage worse” I agree!

You can find threads on this site from people who regret having the surgery and especially from people who have experienced regaining their lost weight. But, basically, every individual has an individual experience--and you are right, the overwhelming reaction is positive. I've read thousands of posts on this site, and the usual thing people say is that it's the best thing they ever did and they wish they'd done it sooner. Despite the fact that I'm older than most on this site, I don't say that, because the technology and expertise continually grows--this surgery wasn't common ten or twenty years ago, and I'm especially happy it was laparoscopic.

The bottom line is that you have to decide what is best for YOU.

Good luck!

I had a friend who was recommended by her doctor not to have surgery because she had too many medical issues going on at the same time. She was told that first they should focus on getting her healthy and then healthy enough to even survive a surgery of this type. I never even considered that someone could be denied by a surgeon for being too sick...

IMHO people should do it when both mentally and medically ready.

That said, absolutely no major regrets on my end. Living my life like normal 4 months post op

Good luck.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
