Hello everyone. I took my first step towards bariatric surgery today and registered for the information session. I am 27 years old weigh 270 lbs my highest of 280 and I am only 5 feet tall. I live in NH and will be doing it through Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. I have been debating surgery for years now. I have a few friends who have had surgery and have never regretted it and my doctor finally recommended me tok a weight and wellness center saying that she said most likely I would be a prime candidate for surgery. Anyone have any advice, suggestions, words of wisdom, etc. For someone just starting the journey?

Are you planning a sleeve, bypass or something else I haven't mentioned? My birthday twin Carol Priest liver somewhere in your state. I remember it is on the shores of that lake with the, impossibly long name of Indian origin. Are you excited to start out? I remember I was, I just switched to a new program and went to their seminar last Friday. I am hoping for I'll hear from them so I can get started and get my surgery. I will be a RnY, it will work best for my own health conditions. I hope I can help you with your journey, just ask if you have any questions, okay? Until, then welcome and please hang around with us for a while.

Welcome! We are happy to have you on our journey with us. My biggest piece of advice is to be ready to wait and be patient. This is a great opportunity to learn about nutrition, exercise, and a whole new lifestyle. If I had to guess, your surgeon will probably recommend a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. That seems to be the default unless you are experiencing some specific issues which may lead to Bypass. You will have some pre-op requirements which depend on your insurance and your program. Keep up with those and ask as many questions as you can along the way.

In all cases, we are all preparing by attempting to lose weight and figure out how to make it to and through the liquid diet! We are here for you, so please feel free to ask any and all questions!

I know I have a significant history of Reflux and Gastritis so I am thinking from research the RNY is what I would be a better candidate for. But we will see. I am trying to work it out with work to take the time off for the April informational meeting otherwise I know that no one else has off for the may date.

There are so many of those lakes around here haha. I think RNY will be my surgery of choice. I have significant reflux issues and from reading sleeve can cause further issues in that department but we will see after the meeting I guess.

From talking that is about how long I will have after the informational meeting. I am lucky that my insurance doesn't require a waiting period and has minimal requirements overall for the surgery from talking to others at my work and we all have the same insurance. The program does have it's own requirements so we will see what they are exactly when I have my first appointments.

Oh yes the snow! It has been crazy these last few weeks. We somehow managed to escape this current one where I live. We have over 3 feet of snow in our yard currently from the last month of snow storms. We have a puppy and the first snow storm she tried to run out like normal and ended up disappearing under the snow. She was not impressed at all.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
