8 Day Post-Op and I’m hungry[emoji53]

Recommended Posts

Sx date was 03.06.18 and I am currently 8 days post-op. I’ve been following the Phase 1 process post-op on nothing but liquids (Protein shakes, broth, Water, Gatorade, and on occasions Jello-o) but I still feel hungry on occasions. So far I’ve lost 10pds but this is mentally draining especially being at home all day.. All my spouse and mother keep saying is be patient but I don’t think they realize how hard challenging it is when you see them continue their normal eating habits while your life consists of liquids liquids liquids... I’m IMpatiently waiting for Phase 2 to kick in lol [emoji30] I caught myself crying for a brief second yesterday of how tired I am of the Protein Shakes (especially since I did the 2 week pre-op liver shrinking diet) ... Anyone has had this struggle?

((hugs)) It's soooo normal. I was chompin' at the bits by 8days Post OP! I don't know if your Gatorade has sugar in it or not, but if it does I'd sub it with Powerade Zero so you aren't drinking pure sugar. That will keep you hungry!

And if you're keeping fluids down easily, then I would say you don't need the Gatorade at all. I'd focus on Water and non-sugar alternatives. Especially if you're getting your fluids and Protein in from protein drinks!

It will get better! You are so close to getting to purees and/or softs!!!

I felt that way at day 8 as well. I later realized though it was all head hunger. I'd only feel hungry if I saw food, or people eating, or TV commercials. Without the trigger I had no hunger. Can you remove yourself while they are cooking or eating? Go for a walk or a drive maybe? It will be easier when you can eat with them, even purees

Hang in there because as you progress with the food stages, this will go away. I am 7 weeks post op and on a normal diet. I don't get hungry unless its meal time, and even then, I have to make a conscious effort to eat. As you eat food with more "residue" you will feel satisfied longer and hunger will subside.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
