About a year and a half ago, I had a total knee replacement. I was 36 years old so I really need this knee to last. It has never really stopped aching though, especially since I work out a lot. It’s good in the morning but by night, it is swollen and inflamed. Obviously if I give it a break for a few days, it does better, but I am only 37 and I want to work out.

Has anyone had WLS after a TKR? Did you feel that it helped your new knee? I think a lot of my problem is carrying 70 extra pounds on my body, and I am really hoping that by losing that, my inflammation will decrease.

Yes. I had right knee TKR 9 yrs ago - I was 60lbs thinner than my pre-op weight because I had been doing WW for over a year. Then like most gained it all back, I am very close to that weight 9 yrs ago now. It is of course less of a load on it thinner.

Now about that pain you have now, maybe get an injection? Or have the doc check for an inflamed nerve - I get that from time to time because scar tissue rubs on a nerve, a shot usually calms it down but he said if it continues or gets worse he could go in and clean up the scar tissue and that should work. This is just a suggestion. It may not be your issue. Make sure to keep it stable while working out, maybe put a brace on it, I know if I square dance (twisting turns) for several nights in a row that can really aggravate that nerve. I was told to strengthen my quads by putting a 5# weight on my thigh while seated and do raises - those muscles support those bones. Good luck. And I hope your surgery goes well.

What brand of knee do you have? Did you keep your knee cap? Can you kneel on it?

I had an ORIF in 2016 and WLS in 2017. I can admit without a doubt. My ankle does not hurt since losing most of the weight. However, I have noticed that as I increase my running, my ankle is starting to hurt more but its an ache. Like an ache you feel from a good workout.

Try doing exercises that are less stress on your joint. I did not start running until I had strengthened my ankle and was below the 200's.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
