Hypoglycemia, 9 Months Post-Op Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am 9 months post op from VSG. I’m wondering if it common to develop hypoglycemia post op? My bariatric NP ordered a 3 hour glucose tolerance test and my glucose levels were below normal. If you have experienced this, what did they do? Is it long-term?

Thanks!

I'm developing a serious case of RH a year out. It seems like anything I eat will cause the reaction. I live with a bag of grapes nearby right now. I'm so thankful I work from home because I need to lie down about 90 minutes after each meal, like clockwork! I really hope this passes.

This is great info. Thanks all! I left a message with my NP today to chat.

I developed such severe hypoglycemia one day and almost needed to divert a cross country flight. My blood sugar crashes more easily than before but is otherwise good. The extremely low blood sugar that one day was terrifying. Surgeon said it isn’t abnormal.

I too have severe episodes of low blood levels between 50 & 60. My primary care doc said to get a glucose test kit, which I did. Some days it was so severe it felt like I would die....well not really but nearly pass out. Turns out nothing else wrong except hypoglycemia. I guess that is what we have to deal with after severe weight loss and not being able to eat much and keep it in our stomachs. Glad to know others have the same issue though.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
