Very discouraged op 1/11/18

Recommended Posts

I will chime in as another who has converted from a lap-band to a sleeve and am a bit shocked at my results thus far. I have lost weight since surgery, but certainly nothing like I anticipated I would. I also have had major stalls, and put weight back on somehow (?!!), that I've been able to get back off but now need to keep the scale moving south. I am following my doctor's plans too, but find I am hungry. I knew I might not be as successful as I was a prior WLS patient - I just didn't think it would come so soon.

Here is where I am at with it. 1) Life is so much better than it was as I have no pain, no discomfort, and can eat without issues. After 10 years with the band this is HEAVENLY!! 2) I'm going to have to work for this, and that's just the hard reality. I am now tracking everything I put in my mouth and staying away from complex carbs (I am eating fruit and veggies). 3) I am going to NEED to exercise, which is a challenge for me to fit into my crazy schedule but there is no way around this either.

It's for sure a bit discouraging and I get what you are dealing with and I've had my own moments, trust me. I just kind of got to the "it is what it is" stage and am now trying to focus on what I can change. At the end of the day I can only control what I eat and how much I move - the rest is not up to me.

(And just for the record, I have lost 14 pounds since surgery - the rest was before.)

Ok, so not trying to be a b***h but really?! I thought this was a place to get help and see if anyone else is going through what we are. Everyone's journey is completely different. I am eating exactly as instructed by my surgeon. I log my food as if I would die without doing it. My doctor is just as baffled as I am. I eat as much as they instruct but my concern WAS why am I always hungry etc. I will explain more in my update on this thread.

Good luck in your continued journey but also remember to be kind

I think that part of what @FluffyChix was trying to say is that as you progress into more solid foods you will feel satisfied longer. I know for myself, things like chicken fill me up and I stay full a lot longer. The liquids you are probably ingesting are running right through you, so to speak. That is why you feel hungry a lot right now. Honestly, I had a really hard time distinguishing between real hunger and head hunger. Even yesterday, (I'm six weeks post op) I had the day off of work and I found myself grazing all day. It was just bad habits creeping back up. Hang in there, there are meals that leave me satisfied and others that don't. I just try and eat at "regular" times and try not to snack.

Hi. I’m sorry that you’re going through such a rough time. I get discouraged too, mostly when the scale doesn’t move. It’s understandable that you’re feeling discouraged because you’re body isn’t adjusting to what you were informed would occur as a result of surgery. Rarely full and always hungry is definitely not what I would have expected either.

Another patient at my surgeon’s office told me he was told post-op patients don’t get hungry. He was pre-op and I was 2 weeks post-op. I could tell he was hopeful that hunger would go away and I told him that I still get hungry. Uh-oh!

My tastes are weird sometimes too, sugar-free popsicles taste sweeter post-op than they did pre-op -almost too sweet. The thought of whether or not I’m eating too much grabs hold of me sometimes. I do feel restriction so I know when to stop but sometimes I’ve eaten too fast and realize I shouldn’t have had that last bite.

Your concerns are certainly legitimate and you may want to talk about them with your doctor if you haven’t already. Your feelings are legitimate. I’ve had similar feelings at various points of this process.

Rest assured that there will be brighter days. You didn’t go through all of this for nothing. Please feel free to message me if you’d ever like to talk. [emoji304]

I was really hungry for a while and occasionally still am. Upped my PPI to 2x a day and definitely felt more full and less hungry as I progressed to solid food. And, before I ate I would ask myself if I was really hungry or if it’s head hunger. Weighed everything at first but now I just eat intuitively because I’ve had significant complications so if I can eat, I eat. 7 months out.

So lemme ask you? What are you eating.
And then the bi*chy part. Just because you CAN eat way more than you're supposed to, doesn't mean you SHOULD eat way more than you're supposed to...
You know? It is up to each one of us to follow our surgeon's rules to the letter of the law, or as closely as we understand them. Right? If it says at 1 month, you're supposed to be eating 1/4c of food 6 times a day...then make it so! [emoji20]
I don't have feelings of satiety right now either at only 2 weeks. None of us will. We just have to blindly try our hardest to process the information they give and follow it.
Once you start eating dense Protein first, not drinking before or after meals, etc, and kicking carbs to the very end IF you have room, you will start feeling restriction. Swearsies.
And in the meantime, 27 fu*king pounds in 1 month is incredible. Makes me want to cut a bit*h. LOL.
Deep congratulations to you on 27lbs!!!! That's amazing and outstanding. Are you overjoyed?
(Sorry for the newbie-splaining. [emoji20] Newbie splaining=When a new post-op baripatient tries to give advice to anyone as if they know what the fu*k is going on.)

You are a trip lol!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
