For those with spouses, I think it's fun to do the Lady n' the Tramp thing and just order a starter, then the meal. That way you can have a bite or two of an app and a bite or four off his/her plate. Then the spouse still has buttwads left of dinner and you're satisfied. I loved sharesies pre-op, and I'm so looking forward to going out and only having the expense of one person plus iced tea for moi! ROFLMAO!!!
But. LOVE the card. Will try to remember to ask my doc tomorrow!!!

Yup that’s what I do about 80% of the time! DH usually lets me pick. Or just order an “extra plate” and take a bit of each of my kids/husbands plates.

Or I order just an app to be delivered with dinner. A lot of the newer “gastropub” type restaurants have Protein first tapas style starters.

I also don’t look at not eating everything as a waste of money... I save so much compared to how much I used to spend on food that I am happy to not eat a full portion. I’m weird in that I still love buffets! I look at it as paying for variety! I get a bite or two of a bunch of different things and am paying for that rather than quantity.

Wow, it looks like a business card. I'd have that thing laminated!! Definitely gonna ask my doctor for one of these!

I just got mine at my 3 wk postop visit! They said keep it in wallet because its an alert if you ever needed a Dr or nurse in emergency situations. Front side lets emergency staff aware that your a bariatric patient other side is for restaurants.

This is my card. Got it at my pre-op group refresher class two weeks before surgery. Front is the note for the restaurant; back is a reminder of foods to eat and those to avoid.

Edit: should note I haven't used it yet, as I'm only three weeks out from surgery.

I hate eating out now too unfortunately. I used to love it. They don't seem to have these cards in the UK. At a restaurant, I asked for a half portion and they refused. I had to attend an awards ceremony the other night - no menu options just the same for everyone. I could only manage 3 or 4 bites then was full. The waiting staff left me as the only one still with a plate at the table for ages then quizzed me when I asked them to take it away. Awkward! Then the other day was pot luck at work. I nibbled some grapes and about 1oz of cheese and my colleagues kept asking what was wrong. Think I'll just dodge these things in the future. X

Just tell them you have an upset stomach... you’re watching your calories/carbs/weight... X On the menu doesn’t agree with you....

It’s a psychological game we have to learn not to associate social activity with food. The whole society does, but we are the ones making the step. Don’t miss out on your life just because there is food involved! A quick excuse for the people who ask... and fewer people notice than you think!

Heck if you’re sassy you could come up with a great zinger that calls them out on them putting their nose in your business in a funny or kind way!

For those of you worried about the too large portions at a restaurant... can I ask why? I’m not being rude or nasty I truly am trying to understand.

Is it the cost? You don’t want to pay for food you aren’t eating?

Is it that you don’t like leftovers or it’s not feasible logistically to bring them home?

Is it a principle thing about wasting food?

My take is I’m saving so much money in the long run eating less that I don’t mind the cost of something I may not eat all of. I also like the small plates/tapas/app menu and I love Soup. Sharing is great and so are leftovers. So I’m trying to understand the other side of things.

I wouldn’t ever want to use one of those cards.... to me that would call more attention to me than leaving food on my plate.

When it comes to buffets, yes.

I simply don't like the hassle of going out to eat. The drive, looking for parking space... -over expensive beverages, the taste of the food all too often not worth the money. I prefer either eating at home or when it comes to meeting friends meeting at a bar or with some little Snacks at home.

Eating out (or delivery services) has become quite expensive during the last years.

Me neither.

I don't like wasting food and unfortunately loads of people have noticed and remarked on how little I'm eating these days. Friends, colleagues, family, waiting staff... I don't think I'm saving money on food either. Healthier stuff is more expensive and when you factor in Protein Shakes and pricey Vitamins, I'm pretty sure it costs more nowadays. I don't regret my decisions at all but public eating is just no fun for me now. I just need to find new friends who want to go to different social settings x

First of all, I don't eat fast food. However, at least if I was going to, I could order from the children's menu, because who questions you in a drive-thru? Nobody, that's who. The main reason I hate going to restaurants is that you pay $7.99+ for a few bites. And unless you are sure that it warms up good, it is a COMPLETE waste of money. I could order a cup of Soup or something, but I try really hard to get my Protein in first. Therefore it usually requires some type of meat. I've heard of the "card" that you give to participating restaurants, but I'm leery if it actually works. I wouldn't want to have to go through the hassle of explaining my personal health history to my waitress. Nonetheless, I eat at home 99.9% of the time, which is fine, except we are a social couple. Going out to eat is a thing, even with my skinny friends. Any advice?

I don't use my bariatric card.

I love going out to restaurants to eat. You can absolutely make it worth your money and make healthy choices.

Get a take home box. Makes for a great lunch or dinner the next day. The joy of a meal without cooking. ;)

Google restaurant menus before you go: (especially if you are traveling)

  • Every restaurant has Protein and vegetables. ( Beef, fish, poultry dishes)
  • They have no problem replacing the carb choice with extra veggies..Just ask.
  • Some have healthy lite menu items.

I do fast food rarely - It's because the quality of the food sucks. - A few things I order on the run..

Carl's Jr. Low carb natural grass fed burger. Most burger restaurants will do lettuce wrapped burgers or I don't eat the bun. I prefer turkey burger patties - Just me..lol

Love cafe zupas high quality great salads.

qdoba childrens burrito bowl. chicken or beef - beans/black or pinto - veggie- cheese -salsa - guacamole (no rice or tortilla )

Cards similar to this given out by various bariatric clinics for post-op patients to use at restaurants.

I'm not worried about too large of portions, because I've got really good self control right now. I guess it is mostly about the cost relation to what you eat. I do take left overs, but it has to be something that is rewarmed well. I guess I just see the cost value of food a lot different when you can only eat 1/16th of a meal.

And to your point about drawing attention, it is much more noticeable when you eat out. At home I only plate what I can finish. So that is another reason I don't like to eat out.

I think we are all relatively on the same page. I just find it more annoying that most. *shrugs*

I always Google restaurant menus now. Even if its somewhere I frequented before surgery. I find that the choices I make now are DEF not the ones I made before. So its like everywhere has a new menu for me.

Purchasing groceries and cooking small meals at home is not cost effective for me. I make enough to have something for a meal the next day. I also freezer meals for healthy no cook quick meals down the road.

In time eating at restaurants becomes normal. Strangers are not watching you eat. I let the restaurant staff refill my Water even though I wont drink it.

If I am asked by restaurant staff or a co worker...is the food ok? You haven't touched your plate?

I say :

I ate earlier, The food was great.... I'll take home the rest in a box.

Cooking at home can be a hassle, but I'm cooking for other people than just myself so I don't get left with as much leftovers as when I go out to eat. I like the suggestion on what to say to a waiter or waitress.

I'm off topic and beating this into the ground. Promise this is my last post. *laughing*

I cook for more than one - I make enough to freeze to have left overs for everyone.

I don't do a meal prep--I just cook extra Proteins that I can make into different types of meals -

I will bake a large flat of chicken breasts from winco. divide them into freezer bags .101 uses for chicken - Chicken alfredo - chicken fajitas - -bbq chicken - Chicken salad - The list goes on.

To each their own....right?

Below is a true meal prep - I don't have this kind of time or dedication - Cool idea though. They cook mains and sides place them in individual freezer containers for the week...Too much work for me-

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
