Has anyone had problems with hair loss after surgery?

Recommended Posts

So I am almost a year out in April. I'm am female and 48. My hair seems to be thinning now. I have , unintentionally, stopped taking my bariatric Vitamins as we were moving out of state, selling our house, getting settled, getting new jobs etc. Then there was the added stress. I'm wondering if it is just that I stopped taking my vitamins and my Protein has reduced or if this is just the way it's going to be. Period. Any thoughts, suggestions, or advice welcome. I am starting my Protein Shakes back up.

Get back on the Vitamins, up your Protein. Stress of any kind can cause Hair loss. Moving and new jobs are up on the list of life stressors. Also, if you are starting to have peri-menopausal symptoms it may be slower for the hair to come back or may come back in a different texture.

I didn't think about menopause. Maybe I need to talk to my doctor about getting checked for that. I haven't had any symptoms that I know of. Thanks for the suggestions!

If you google this it is common after bariatric surgery.

I did and there is loads of information, but but nothing with a personal perspective as there is on Bariatric Pal.

3 months after surgery and mine is coming out in bundles currently. I knew this was a danger though.

And to be honest I've had alopecia before a few months after my nan died. I got over that so I'm really not to bothered this time round. I know stressing about it will just make it worse and it's a small price to pay in my opinion for the amazing health boosts I am experiencing after surgery.

It'll grow back :)

This happened to me - lost a lot of hair! I switched to a sulfate free Shampoo, took Biotin pills (the kind that dissolve in your mouth), and upped my Protein intake. This is normal and cold take months to get your hair back. Keep taking your vitamins!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
