I am 63 and New here, about to turn my sleeve into a bypass. So any suggestions welcomed. I was 58 for the sleeve and it was relatively easy. I’m hoping for similar success with the bypass!

Just curious. If you want to share... Why are you turning your sleeve Inyo a bypass?

@GSierraGold - RNY is more aligned with reversal of diabetes but even it is not a magic bullet. The malabsorption ends around the 2nd year or becomes much less pronounced, as the body figures out a way to work around the new anatomy. So it's still super crucial to learn a whole new way of eating that controls your carbs and sugars and doesn't put any further stress on the already stressed beta cells in your pancreas.

I've seen it come back in a number of people at around the 2nd to 3rd year. But this surgery at least gives you a fighting chance at the win!

I had my RNY at 55. Too many comorbidities to bore you with here. The only regret I have is that I didn't do this sooner. My only complication is a lack of clothing to cover my booty when I leave the house. Everything is bagging off of me or entirely too big and new clothes cost money. LOL. Shocker!

Hey Bariatric peeps of a Certain Age- things turning, sunny for me after a dark dismal patch of time. OSU not only wants me, their staff psychologist Dr Kramer says they will be thrilled to have me, I not only, passed but we had a nice chat. He pointed out things in my emotional past I thought might be failings and/or detriments, those are strengths I can fall back on and utilize for my success in this endeavor. He said, with my permisson, he'd like to follow my,on-going story into the future. He believes I will be a success, I believe I will be a success and now it is full speed ahead to the finish! World🌏 just watch me fly straight and true now!

I was 59 at the time of my gastric bypass 10/2014. I was on insulin and still had blood sugars in the 300’s , high blood pressure ,sleep apnea could hardly walk I was so short of breath and zero ability or desire to lead a “normal” life. That was then, I am now turning 64 exercise almost daily and feel wonderful. I am off all my meds except for my synthroid but even that has been reduced. No more sleep apnea and I feel better then I did at 30. I am now loving and living life. I weighed 286 I am now at 140 but had been as low as 130 I would like to stay around the 135 range.

I was 57 when I had my RNY bypass. I can't say it has been without complications but each one has been dealt with as its come up. On a positive note I have lost 200lbs in 9 months so the surgery itself has been a great success and nothing was age related. I am not longer diabetic no longer have high blood pressure and have gone from size 32 - 18

Hi. leea, I just answered you on another posting but don't be scared or anxious, you've got me as well as another bunch of people on Bariatric Pal. Things are looking, probable,i will be a June Bug Bariatric patient too. We will make it through together, so take my hand across the miles if you need to. I'm friendly, kind of a Momma Hen at times, pretty calm and loads of life experience. You feel sorta old to be doing this? Don't I'm even older than you, I'm a 72 year old widow, have 1 son who lives with me, a daughter who lives 610 of mile from me my code name for her is RD, short for Rotten Daughter, she talks or texts me once in a blue moon if she's inclined. An example I tested her that one of her high school classmates had been killed, if it had been me I would have called my mother ,her grandmother, right then. She waited until, today to text back. Every family has one of those, I unfotunately gave birth to mine . My remaining son is now an angel, he died at 31 10 years ago, he had a undiagnosed congenital heart condition but what actually k8lled him was a ruptured aorta, he bled to death internally in a minute maybe a minute and a half, the world is much poorer without him , he was a wonderful son, a wonderful young man and his brother and I miss him still. That was January 11 2008, on the 4th of July 2012 my husband and the kids dad died after 44 and a half years of marriage. John had just turned 70 on March. Every 5 years we have lost someone in my side of the family, 2018 should be that year again. I'm an only child,i have no one else to spare. My parents my Daddy in 1993,my Mamma in 2003, all my aunt's and uncles on both sides, Daddy had 11 brothers and sisters, Mamma 7, all gone. I cannot stand to lose Bryan my baby, he feels the same about me. Still he does support me seeking my surgery, he knows it is my chance at a future life, he won't stand it the way. RD she sadly doesn't care too much, I called her to tell her about because she was my firstborn, first she changed the subject to herself, when I tried to tell her again she said Whatever, so I said Whatever right back to her and gave up.Its like being the mother of a monkey, a whole other species.
Well I've chattered on long enough but lets be friends okay? I'll try not to be so boring the next time😝

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
