Fellow Migraine Sufferers

Recommended Posts

For those who have/had chronic Migraines, I'm wondering how surgery has affected how often you get migraines. It seems like research is mixed on whether or not WLS improves or worsens migraines.

For me a low calorie diet tends to trigger migraines at least in the first few days (though during the pre-op diet I have been mostly ok). I normally take a prescription NSAID for migraines (1-3x times a month), and while my surgeon said I could keep taking it, I'm still a bit worried about taking NSAIDs post-op.

I had my surgery 2 weeks ago and have had a Migraine every day since. I don't think they'll go until I start eating normally again. I plan on checking with my doctor asap.

I've had Migraines on and off since puberty. I can usually attribute mine to my monthly cycle or dehydration. Post op I've had some days that it was difficult to get all of my required Water in and it usually results in a Migraine the next morning. Not getting proper Protein can also do this now. When you initially change your diet it's possible that you'll experience headaches or migraines because it's a change to your normal intake. I changed my diet drastically with the guidance of my NUT about 6 weeks before surgery which I think helped the transition to the post op diet.

You should look into botox for your Migraines. My sister gets Migraine associated vertigo and botox has helped a lot. I get chronic headaches but it’s usually because I’m dehydrated.

Have been a Migraine sufferer since I was 9 years old, averaging 2 a month. Since surgery, I've only had 2 Migraines and 1 headache (9 months out). The 2 migraines were directly due to my having eaten decent amount sugar after 8 pm (woke up with flaming migraine each time about 5 am)...1st was at a wedding and 2nd was celebrating a birthday (had wedding Desserts and birthday cake and ice cream). While I've had a sweet from time to time usually early in the day and a small amount. From everything I've read, I believe my new eating plan has allowed me to balance my serotonin and that it went haywire when I ate too much sugar.

The regular headache was direct dehydration.

I still get Migraines. They haven't changed as to how often I get them. I'm on about 4 different things for them... One of them being Botox.

I can say that a few times the migraines were caused by stress and just being really really tired. Any other time, I just get them and have no idea why I get them. They just happen... Every day. I'm lucky if they go away on their own for a few days.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
