Hhs1078 3 Posted March 3, 2018 I had surgery on November 20th 2017. I have lost 50lbs (start weight 250, now 200!)..which I am totally excited about. However, I have just gotten my 3rd UTI since surgery and I really don't know why. I never got them prior to the surgery. I wear cotton underwear, I drink a lot of water/fluids (80oz plus per day), I urinate frequently. I urinate before and after sex (not frequent sex, 4 kids and spouse travels for work), I wipe front to back, I added cranberry supplements to my diet after 2nd UTI. Has anyone else had this problem? And what did you do about it? It is beginning to drive me crazy. I don't want to live with chronic UTI's for life! Also..i have not gotten my period since the beginning on November (before surgery)...anyone else have that happen too?
James Marusek 5,244 Posted March 3, 2018 When you underwent surgery, you were probably given antibiotics during your hospital stay. This was to prevent the possibility of an bacterial infection. The problem is that antibiotics kill not only the bad bacteria but also the good bacteria in your gut. Therefore it is necessary to take Probiotics after you finish the antibiotics to restore the colonies of good gut bacteria that can fight off recurring episodes of UTI. According to the internet: One promising alternative is the use of live microorganisms (probiotics) to prevent and treat recurrent complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI). The human normal bacterial flora is increasingly recognised as an important defence to infection. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2684288/
Sosewsue61 3,185 Posted March 3, 2018 Yes hormones are crazy weird after surgery and fast cell turnover I'm guessing could contribute to UTI's. It hasn't happened to me, but I am over the hill (menopause). You may want to switch Protein Drink brands if you are still using them, not sure the acidic content of any food choices but maybe stick with bland food for a week and really increase the plain Water. Did you get tested - take antibiotics or the med that coats the uninary tract? You could also be getting a kidney stone?
Hhs1078 3 Posted March 3, 2018 Yes. Tested positive from urine sample at clinic. Organism is e coli on all cultures. They seem to clear up but come back. Was given the antibiotic Cipro each time.
