Worried about hydration at work

Recommended Posts

I’m in the middle of my insurance requirements for surgery and things are going well. However, I am extremely worried about being able to stay hydrated in my work environment when I go back after a couple weeks. I work in a lab, so everywhere is considered “dirty” and any kind of food/snacks/water etc is strictly forbidden.

How often do you need to take a sip of Water to stay adequately hydrated? I can go to the break room, but I’m just worried about getting in trouble for leaving so often.

Anyone have any advice?

Thanks in advance!

I would take more than two weeks off - at two weeks it was very difficult to take in enough at one sitting to quench your thirst as you will have inflammation, plus you can't eat and drink at the same time. I would take 4 or 5 weeks off. If you can't, get a Dr's note in order to take enough breaks to drink Water and get a snack. (It's understandable that you can't take things in the lab.)

Are you on a rate - expected to meet quotas daily? If so - definitely take more medical leave - use FMLA. Good luck

@sara_bear hey fellow lab scientist!! I too know how difficult it is to stay hydrated in our working environment. I get 2 x 15min breaks and 1x30min break for lunch so it's not really enough time when you can only sip. Im lucky im mostly off the bench now as im in management these days. Most places have a clean space e.g. office area nearer that the tea room. Does your line manager know of your surgery? If so, I'm sure extra breaks will not be an issue as long as you still work your assigned hours. If your operation is private or your manager gets awkward, id visit occupational health/employee health for advice. I also agree with @Sosewsue61 that 2 weeks isnt enough. Youre still an infection control risk due to incision sites Xx

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
