Hiatal Hernia found in pre-op testing and something else...

Recommended Posts

Did anyone else find out in pre-op testing that you have a hiatal hernia? They found I have a small one. They also found some type of cyst-like thing attached to the stomach and I was told they will want to investigate what it is. I am a breast cancer survivor of 5 years, and I am terrified this thing they found is something to be worried about. For those that also had a hernia, did they automatically fix it in surgery? How was your healing afterwards?

Thanks in advance.

I had a big hiatal hernia. They fixed it during surgery. I had a super easy recovery. If you get pain in your shoulder...I've been told it can be deferred nerve pain from the hernia repair.

I didn’t even know I had a hiatal hernia until I overheard a nurse telling another nurse at shift change that my surgeon repaired one.

I also had a minor one. Its super common for obese people. They fixed mine and the pain from that (think it was very swollen) was the worst part of it. They say it can lengthen recovery a bit, but its still not too bad. The procedure itself is simple because they are right there, so no real change in the surgery other than you may have some gas in the chest area. The good news is it cured my heart burn!

I likely got mine from horse riding. Not the riding itself...the flying off and landing on my back like a dropped sack of flour when a horse refused a jump....that might have had something to do with it. Splat! Must have done that half a dozen times in the past decade. Knocked the wind out of me horribly...so painful.

I had a major one, a large part of my stomach was bulging up into my esophagus. They fix with a few stitches, adding less than 5 minutes of surgery time. I didn't think it added any pain or difficulty to my surgery, and I have no more heartburn. My PCP says she can still hear it, but it's much better than it was.

Thanks everyone. I hope the plan is to fix it so it goes away. I am still very concerned about the extra thing they found. Won't know more about that until after the surgery. I hope they decided to remove it and have it biopsied.

We'll all pray that it is just a small cyst, an anomaly you were born with or something like a "floor burn" from your stomach and esophagus sliding up and down and kinda rubbing your diaphragm in transit. Like the song Every little thing gonna be All right. Love and hugs[emoji197]

They do send the whole removed portion of stomach to pathology for testing, so that wi be good. I imagine they will try to set it up to ensure they get the whole thing out. Hopefully it's harmless.

I had one repaired during my surgery on 2/28/17. Not a big difference in pain. My recovery has been fairly easy and I've only needed liquid Tylenol for pain. The gerd is gone! You'll do just fine!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
