***its a long one sorry***

I am about 6 weeks out (RNY 1/8/18) and I have been nauseous for weeks!!

My post-op diet instructions are to eat 3 meals a day:

2-consisting of up to 4oz of Protein only and

1-consisting of up to 4oz of protein and 1/2c of non-starchy veggies. I just started adding veggies at 4weeks. Not to mention my Water, Vitamins and potassium.

The nausea started about 3 weeks ago and I was given zofran which didn’t help. I would eat a few bites of whatever protein I was having and have to stop eating because I thought I would vomit. The Dr. did a swallow study and decided I needed an endoscopy for a better look. Turns out I have a duodenal ulcer. Now I have to take Carafate which is supposed to help. Sadly, I am still experiencing the nausea and I can barely eat. Veggies don’t seem to give me a problem and beans/legumes don’t seem to bother me much either. I can’t even stand the Protein Shakes I used to drink and I have tried protein water (Isopure & Premier) and it has the same result....I can’t stomach it. I have not vomited once I just feel like I will if I consume another bite or sip!!! I try my best to force myself to eat the protein but I know I’m not getting close to enough of it. I am exhausted after taking a shower like I just worked out.....it’s ridiculous. I really had planned to start strength training at this point but there is no way I can, I don’t consume enough food. Anyone have any ideas or a similar experience? This ulcer medication I’m on takes time to work but in the mean time I’m looking for some support or ideas or even some encouragement would be appreciated...I’m feeling a little low.

I’m sorry, I don’t understand what you mean. Are you looking for my weight loss stats?

Well yes and more. Up on the top right is a bar with your name and avatar. Click the drop down menu and go to Account Settings, My Ticker, My Surgery.

Once there, you can fill out a ton of different information like your surgical info, your weight, the type of surgery, when it was, etc. Look at my response here. See how there is all this information showing under my name?

If you leave all your stuff blank, it's just incredibly difficult for us to know or remember where you are in your journey and pretty difficult to offer support or relative experience. Also, adding a ticker (which resides in the same place and is easy to set up) helps us know your weight loss history.

According to the internet:

Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present.

Carafate is a sucralfate. I was on it for a while after surgery. My surgeon had prescribed taking Omeprazole (over the counter Prilosec) for the first year after surgery to give my stomach a chance to heal properly. Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor. So this might be of help to you. Check with your doctor.

Also avoid any aspirin or products that contain aspirin or other NSAIDs. And make sure that you were tested for H Pylori infection. A high percentage of individuals have this infection and generally don't even know it until it shows up with a vengeance after bariatric surgery.

Hope you feel better soon!! I don’t have any advice, just my personal experience. I was terribly nauseous and could barely eat for the first 4-5 weeks. It eventually just went away. Some people don’t get nauseous at all. It’s just a completely different experience for everyone. Hang in there!!

Thanks! I guess my nausea is related to my ulcer 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t really get it but I just keep taking my medicine like the Dr said and I’m hopeful that it will go away soon

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
