RN twelve hour shifts

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I’m going to be getting the sleeve in a couple of months but every time that I work I have huge second thoughts because I don’t know how I will find the time to eat and sip Water all day between managing patients. I work on a tele/step down unit with four patients. Anyone out there have any thoughts?

Eating is three meals and two Snacks a day, and they want you to eventually get to three meals, so that's a temporary problem. As for Water, if you have a long enough commute, you could drink 32 oz on the way to work and 32 oz at home, or 16 oz on the way to work, 16 oz on the way home, and 32 at home.

It's been hard for me to get to my Water goals lately because it's been so cold out, but once spring arrives and arrives for good, I should be able to get my water goals in just on the train to/from work.

I work in a chem plant and can also have a demanding work schedule. I took 3 weeks off work and was glad I did. When I got back it was a challenge getting in Water and food on any type of routine. I just make sure I always have a bottle of water with me and sip as I go. For meals, I just make sure to eat a little something when I get a break. I'm almost 7 weeks post op now and it's getting easier each week as I'm able to eat more.

Pockets on the scrub shirt one with 8 oz bottle of Water (sip before you enter every room and after you exit )
The other pocket with string cheese, and a Protein Bar or Jerky

Yes, and they can reload the pockets throughout the shift if needed/able.

Great suggestion, I had no ideas on this one!

Yea...my weight management doctor told me I should only be out for a week then at the orientation the surgeon said a month. So I am also wondering how long people with professions like these took off.

Take off as long as financially possible

I'm 8 days out and feel awesome! But I don't have an exhausting job of being on my feet for 12hour shifts, nor am I doing heavy lifting. You are limited on lifting to about 10lbs for a certain length of time? Maybe 6-8weeks?

I understand. But I’m just wondering how people were feeling at certain stages.

Sometimes you're going to have a bad day (or week) where you feel hopeless.

Sometimes you'll feel indestructible. Lol

Balance is key.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
