Weight Loss in the First Month

Recommended Posts

So often we get the question here..

Am I losing enough weight? I don't think I'm losing fast enough. I'm six hours/days/weeks from surgery and I've lost only 2/12/40 pounds. What's WRONG with me? Am I FAILING?

Never fear people.

I just read this in an article in a health magazine:

Weight Loss by Month

Since weight loss is reported as a percentage, the number of pounds you shed per month depends on where you started. It also depends on the time since surgery. Findings in the October-December 2013 issue of the "Journal of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons" suggested that people having sleeve gastrectomy lost more of their excess weight in the first few months after surgery. In this study of 100 patients, on average, subjects lost about 18 percent of their excess weight in the first month. Average weight loss by the end of 6 months was 50 percent of the excess body weight, and by the end of the first year, they had lost about 63 percent of their excess weight.

Now, really pay attention to what this says...

18 percent in the first month.

If you have 100 pounds of excess weight....you will lose on average...about 18 pounds that first month.

Those of ya'll who have only 60 or so pounds to lose....can expect to lose around 11 pounds that big first month.

And it all narrows from there. Typically, a little less loss each month.

So please don't panic if you've got 85 pounds to lose....and you're not dropping 46 pounds a month like a Dr. Nowzaradan patient!

If you've got 85 to lose....and you drop 15 pounds that first month? You're average. You're doing great!

If you've got 50 pounds to lose (cause ya did well with your pre-op diet and you're kinda short)....and you only lose 9 pounds the first month? You're average! Good job!

If you lose a little more or a little less than average? That's still OK!!!! Everyone's a little different and people's bodies love to stall and make them crazy:)

Just wanted to provide a little perspective to those feeling discouraged because they haven't lost the massive amounts of weight you see on the TV shows and Youtube channels:)

Stick to the program.

Trust.

Be Patient.

You got this:)

You have to remember its an average too, that means that most people will be above or below that number, so being a little above or below doesn’t really mean anything other than you’re on track. Very few people will be exactly “average”

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
