Weight loss required

Anyone know if kaiser Fontana required 10% of weightloss before surgery? Will you be denied or prolonged if weight is not met?

I dont know specifically about kaiser, but my plan we are required by insurance to perform a medically monitored diet where we dont specifically have to lose but we cant gain. After that, the insurance packet is submitted and when approval is received we do a month long pre-op diet where we are given a weight loss goal, while we are told it is an easily achievable goal it shows are sticking to the prescribed diet. If we dont meet that goal in the month leading to surgery then we have been told that the surgery will be pushed back.

It was “highly recommended” that I lose 10% of my body weight. I did not and was still approved for surgery by both the surgeon and my insurance company (BCBS, not Kaiser). Having both a BMI over 40 and comorbidities probably helped.

Hello,

I am doing the Options classes through Kaiser in Bakersfield and we were told they would like a 10% weight loss, however I haven't heard of anyone being denied because they didn't reach that goal. They do want to make sure that you are trying and able to loose on your own. They do keep mentioning that it helps with shrinking the liver as well, which is what they have to move out of they way to get to your stomach.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
