Nothing Tastes Good!

Recommended Posts

So I’m 39 days post-op, and I’m cleared for solids except for breads, pastas, etc. The problem is nothing tastes good. Even the smell of some foods I would normally eat grosses me out. This was a problem during my soft food phase, but i thought it would pass. Since it hasn’t, I’ve had to rely heavily on Protein Drinks. I’m worried that this is going to catch up with me. Is there anyone that more than a month post-op that still relies on Protein drinks as their main source of nutrition?

I’m still finding chili, stews, and thick Soups to be the easiest to tolerate, which probably wouldn’t make my dietitian happy. I might start experimenting with plant-based meat substitutes, which would make my wife happy.

That far out I relied on them for about 1/2 of the macros I needed. When I met with my NUT I was told that I needed to retrain my digestive track to work effectively so I had to eat real food again (I was eating easy foods like cheese).
I was also instructed by my NUT to use all the spices I wanted to while cooking my Protein sources. That really helped.

I am 30 days out and have just moved to my soft food stage, so a bit behind you. But having exactly the same problem. I was dying to get to the soft food because the puree stage was horrible. I have literally lived on shakes and broth since surgery. And now even the smell of cooking, and of my favourite meals, makes me nauseous. I am starting to think that I have forgotten how to eat! I have added some things that I seem to tolerate, like soft cheese, yoghurt (Chobani is best for protein), slow cooked beef curry and BBQ chicken. My dietician says that taste changes are completely normal, and although they can revert back, often they don't. She said if you think you don't like the taste of a food, forget it for a month, then try again to see... Your tastes might have changed again.

I was so glad to see this post because foods like yogurt and cottage cheese that I used to love taste off to me. I was wondering if this was normal. I'm still in the soft food phase so am still eating a lot of Soup. I'm so curious to know why my tastebuds have turned against me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
