I was wondering, if my insurance or surgeon requires a sleep apnea test, do i do that at home or do i have to stay overnight at the specialist?

I have United Health

Thanks so much!! Hope everyone is having a great day!!

They all seem to do it differently. It seems like the trend is moving more towards doing them in your own home though.

I took my test years ago and had to sleep at the sleep center. I slept in a room that looked like a normal bedroom and it wasn't too bad. Of course everyone would be more comfortable at home in their own bed though.

That was what i was hoping. I don't think i could sleep in a strange place with a mask on...lol

Although at times i am so tired I think I could sleep on rocks!

It sounds like you would be wise to get tested whether your surgeon requires it or not. Using the cpap made a huge difference in the quality of my life. You get used to the mask fairly quick and feel so much better that I never want to sleep without it.

Really? Wow! I wouldn't mind that one at all! So sounds like the test is a good thing then.

It is if you have sleep apnea. Another point to note is that untreated sleep apnea does damage to your heart. The sooner you get diagnosed and treated, the less damage will be done to your heart.

I will have to do some research on this. I have never really thought about it until I decided go for bypass surgery and read others talk about it. Thanks so much! I will for sure have it checked out now:)

Depends on the clinic. Mine was in 2011 and done at a facility. It was the worst night’s sleep I’ve ever gotten. My wife did an at-home study and I think I’d prefer to go in whenever I get a new one to see if I can get rid of the masks

i did in home. I told my doctors if i had to do it onsite it would be a waste of time because i would never sleep. I just barely got enough with the take home version.

Oh they don't care how long you sleep, they care about what you do when you do sleep. My ENT quickly corrected me on that point when I tried to argue my polysomnogram wasn't accurate because I got a terrible night's sleep.

I have Aetna and I had to do one at home first. Once that one showed apnea then I had to go do a sleep study at the hospital. I did hear other insurances do not require the at home one first. This is just my experience.

I had to do 2 sleep studies back in 2014 both at the hospital they are annoying but if you have apnea you need to get tested the machines they have now are amazing and I'm sleeping better than ever

I am hearing that the machines really help you sleep a lot better. I know a couple people that use them and say they can't sleep without them now:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
