Alcoholic Drinks

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

Does anyone have any alcohol suggestions that are the best option for my situation? I know your tolerance is basically gone post op but I just turned 21 years old so alcohol free is a little harder than anticipated. I do not like michelob ultra (My mom was sleeved 6 years ago and this is her drink of choice). Please drop suggestions!!

Nobody should prefer Michelob Ultra.

Beer can be difficult to drink but all depends on the person. Hard alcohol is obviously easier to drink if you mix it with something. Yes, it will hit you hard and fast even if you were a seasoned drinker prior to surgery.

All that being said if you're only 6 weeks out from surgery as your signature indicates that's reeeeeeeeeally way to early to be considering having a drink. Won't lecture you but it's a slippery slope. If you're willing to go off plan already then you could be setting yourself up for failures. You've been given a chance to have a fresh start. I'd kill to go back to being 21 and having this surgery done way back when. Make the best of it.

I appreciate your concern but I’ve actually be doing really well food wise and am just trying to make wise decisions for Memorial Day Weekend and such. I already gave up alcohol for lent just to tack on another reason why I can’t drink it lol!! Right now all I drink is Water with the occasional diet snapple. If you have any preferred drinks please share!!

If I want to have a cocktail I typically just go with vodka. Either with diet cranberry juice or mix some in with my Crystal Light. If you go that route keep it light starting out. Like half a shot to a rather large glass of whatever you mix it with. I never cared for bottled mixed drinks or the ciders. They're heartburn in a bottle for me.

I'm a craft beer guy so that's what I love most, but it's tough to drink. I have to be strategic in how I handle it. Some can't handle the carbonation at all. If I pace myself I can drink a whole beer in half and hour or so, but it's pretty much one and done.

So, just be careful. Most if not all surgeons/NUTs advise to not drink. Why? Because it is very common for people to replace eating issues with alcohol and the statistics are very high that many people who have had the surgery become alcoholics. Not everyone but it is a huge risk. And to start drinking alcohol that soon after surgery seems like a huge red flag to me. As someone has said, carbonated drinks of any sort, including beer, are not advised and can be really tough.

I had been told no juice, no carbonated beverages - ever. Not just at the beginning. And to avoid alcohol, especially at the beginning. I do have wine now and sometimes a small glass of bourbon but the sugars in them are a lot as well.

I would advise you to ask your surgeon and nutritionist what they think/recommend. That would be the best option.

As I already stated, I am not interested in drinking right this second. I am trying to plan for the future. Memorial Day Weekend is months away and I don’t plan on binge drinking. I’m trying to figure out the best way to have fun while still staying healthy and watching my consumption.

i haven’t had my surgery yet but have lost 50lbs on my own this past yr & have kept it off despite pool parties, holidays,& going out.i usually drink cherry or grape vodka w/diet cherry/cran or sometimes in the summer peach, pineapple,or coconut vodka w diet tropical juice.i also luv the hungry girl 100 calorie margaritas for a crowd but u probably should drop the diet 7up because of the carbonation.i also like mojitos but maybe use coconut Water instead if club soda & i use a little stevia or truvia to muddle the mint & lime, the mint really is soothing on the stomach.i will surely miss the cocktails but hopefully learn one day how to balance them in the far future.

Thanks for being supportive as opposed to lecturing me! I don’t drink regularly so I figured drinking on a holiday weekend would be okay and I should try to plan accordingly. I figured skinny margaritas would be a good way to go but after hearing some suggestions, vodka (diet)cran sounds like a good idea!!

oh ur so welcome, this is an entire lifestyle change & we all have to trade info & ideas & find what works for us best.i struggle w the thought of never eating or drinking anything bad vs.eating terrible & i know i personally want to eventually find a balance of eating healthy most of the time but being able to enjoy some treats or small meals on holidays, birthdays,or special occasions.i cant imagine never making my mom’s german potato salad ever again & never eating a piece of cake on my bday.i guess u have to make better versions of them or eat in moderation or give them up altogether if it leads u dwn the wrong path.this is all a journey.i do know that my main priority is nutrients & Water first & to not stretch my sleeve out when i get it by eating bigger & bigger meals.also incorporating realistic & sustainable exercise.

YES!!! This is exactly how I’ve been doing it. My mom had the sleeve done and there have been times when I’m crying bc I want something off my diet and she keeps saying “be good to yourself.” So I bought an airfryer and made my favorite thing for dinner tonight: chicken Parm. Homemade gravy, fat free cheese, air fried and breaded in branflakes!! Was a great variation of my favorite food. Buying an airfryer was a great idea bc I don’t miss out on my favorite foods!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
