Surgery approved, Pre-Op diet starts Wednesday

Recommended Posts

I was incredibly fortunate and my insurance approved me within four days, and my surgery (sleeve) was scheduled for March 14th due scheduling issues. I'm looking forward to it and I'm so grateful that I got this far. But...

My pre-op diet is two weeks of Protein Shakes for Breakfast and lunch, and for dinner 3 oz of lean meat and veggies. I'm really scared I might mess it up somehow, or the cravings are going to make me constantly hangry(hungry/angry) or leave me with no energy. Does anyone have suggestions for the best way to get through this part? I know this is the start of the Real Hard Work, and I'm ready to take it on. I'm just nervous and looking for advice/reassurance.

I was also curious how many people had to stop taking their daily meds for the pre-op diet. I take anti-depressants and occasional painkillers (not ibuprofen) for back pain, so I was wondering if either of those will be nixed as well.

I'm just a little ahead of you in that I'm scheduled for March 6th and I started a similar pre op diet last Sunday. I did find the first 2 or 3 days tough and had to distract myself a few evenings to keep away from the fridge. I'd say my energy levels are back to normal now after the initial few days, but I think my concentration levels aren't great at times, so don't go making any big life decisions during this time as you may experience a little "brain fog"!
I can't say that I have had a lot of cravings over the diet so far as you stay on a pretty even keel rather than the highs and lows of a high carb diet. The only negative so far is probably that the food is boring at the moment, but that's a very small issue when compared to the big and exciting changes that the surgery will bring :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
