Sleep Requirements have Changed!

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else experienced a change in their sleep habits after surgery?

Before surgery I needed 8 hours of sleep every night. I would go to bed at 8:30pm and get up at 4:30am so I could be at work at 5:30am everyday. My body was so used to these hours that even on weekends I would get up around 4:30am.

I currently only need 6 hours of sleep. I now go to bed at 9pm and have to force myself to stay in bed until 3am. I don't feel tired, I am still full of energy and I don't take naps. I do find myself feeling very tired around 9pm and when I go to bed I fall right to sleep. I don't feel I am depriving my self of sleep, I actually feel great all day long.

I’m wondering if you had sleep apnea that cleared up after you lost weight. Did you ever get tested?

Yes I have used a CPAP machine for about 12 years and still use it. Maybe I should get tested again.

Several years before surgery, my snoring would keep my wife awake all night long. She was a light sleeper and she really needed her sleep. A few months after surgery, I woke up in the middle of the night and found my wife hovering over me in bed. I asked her what she was doing. She said I was sleeping so quietly, she thought I had passed away and she was trying to see if I was still breathing.

Lol I'm sure I would have done that exact same thing. My late husband, I woke up one AM, spoke to him, he didn't answer, touched him and he felt cool, I stuck my hand in the back of his briefs and touched his bum. He woke up, oh my did he ever. Good thing I could run faster than him cause he was NOT happy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
