Jerseygirl4523 44 Posted February 22, 2018 (edited) Did anyone live alone when they had surgery? My mom is going to come and stay with me, but I can’t see her staying more than a week. is there anything I should know about or consider? I have a 15 minute walk in my city to work everyday from my apartment. If I am experiencing too much pain to walk, I will get an Uber. I’ve heard of making sure that things that I need aren’t too low to the ground or too high as bending and reaching can be an painful. ke12 13 Posted February 22, 2018 I’m in the same situation! I’m taking off a week for work and my mom will be here that week, but then after that I’ll be going back to my normal commute into the city, which includes walking and the train. I’m curious to know what insight people have to offer about this!
Nessy76 134 Posted February 22, 2018 (edited) I live by myself, did not have anyone stay with me. I made sure my house was prepared for when i got home, fridge prepped, house cleaned, laundry done etc. so I could relax for a few days. A friend stopped over a few days post op and did some minor chores for me (scooping cat litter, dragging garbage bins to the end of the driveway) but i could have done them myself with some discomfort. I was driving 4 days post op, mostly bc i was bored and wanted to get out of the house but I also was in school and had to attend class. The first few days are the worst then you should notice dramatic improvement each day, a week should be plenty as far as having help around. Personally, I would really try to get 2 weeks off of work if you could..i definitely needed it. Diana_in_Philly 1,426 Posted February 22, 2018 I live with my husband and two teens. I wished I had lived alone! I would have loved a day or two of quiet. I cooked dinner for them all the night after I came home! I am able to split my work between home and office. I had surgery Tuesday, got home Wednesday. Friday, I did the grocery shopping as normal, but had them carry stuff in because I had a 10 pound lifting limit until my post op appointment. I worked from home most of the day Friday. I was in the office on Monday for most of the day. Tuesday I worked from home a full day, as I would normally do and by Wednesday, a week after getting home, things were pretty normal for me. But your mileage may vary. Just make sure you have what you in in the house before you head out for surgery and consider finding a pharmacy that will deliver your prescriptions so you don't have to wait for them or go out to get them after you get home. Best of luck on your journey.
Myaiku_Kuraitani 245 Posted February 22, 2018 I live alone but I didn't come straight home after surgery. I went to my parent's place. I didn't think I could manage the first few days on my own and I was kind of right. I kept forgetting to get in enough fluids and didn't care too much for eating. After a while, my Vitamins at the time got a little gross-tasting so I wouldn't take those. They had to continuously remind to take my post-op antacid meds and the meds I would normally take. Lol I was there from the day I left the hospital, til after Memorial Day which was last year. So... About after a month I went back home, they felt I was ready enough. Best thing to do or to consider is to find vitamins you'll enjoy eating post op... Before your surgery day... Or get the Patches. The patches are easier but seems to cost more but a lot of people find coupons somewhere for them now. I just get the gummies free of charge. My insurance pays for them as long as go to a certain store. Maybe your insurance does the same? Also if you feel a week may not be enough, see if she'd be willing to let you stay there for as long as you need. If you're within the same city limits or somewhere close, just take an uber to work from there. Some things like getting up or even just walking from here to there can be a little tough for some... Then there's the whole nausea thing and being sleepy all the time. Helps just having an extra pair of eyes in cases like these cause I know I lost track of things they wanted me to keep note of. My mom saved my butt when it came to that. You could be better at that than I am... Just thought I'd give you a heads up or something.Hw-273Sw-226CW-133GW-130Size- 4 or 6, Small in sweats.
