My nurse made me feel like a failure and a PIG

Recommended Posts

so sorry about the nurse. That sucks. She was very unprofessional. I'm 12 days post op and I'm angry at a nurse from the hospital. I had an IV infiltration. (the IV fluids were dripping directly into my arm instead of my vein. the needle punctured the vein.) MY arm was horribly swollen and bruised and excrutiatingly sore. This gruff old nurse comes it and wants to take my blood pressure in my forearm. I told her it was swollen and sore, and she says, "Well, I can't very well put it around the other arm can I, the new IV is placed there." Well, crap, I'm in a bariatric hospital unit, why did they not have large pressure cuffs that would fit around my UPPER arm??? I was so put off. Then she grabs my arm and does it anyway. I almost screamed with pain. It was horrible.

I had the same treatment Monday at the Cardiology Lab, with two techs. I am going to write them up and send it to the Hospital Director. They need to be held accountable.

I had my surgery on Nov. 1st and really started eating solids this past week. I am so much more hungry. I was wondering if this was normal and after your response and the reactions of everyone else I am glad that it is not uncommon. I think I might be pms-ing which really isn't helping. I don't get my first fill until Dec 17th. My goal has been not to gain more than a few pounds from the 18 I have lost but I hope that is possible.

My doc told me not to be surprised if you gain back all the weight you lost preoperatively. Which, for me, is 10 of the 18 lbs. Yikes! Also, it is EXTREMELY hard not to drink with my meals. Any suggestions, anyone????

I'm glad this site is here! God Bless!

I found that after I finally got to the right "fill" level, the difficulty not drinking went away - AND I HATED NOT DRINKING WITH MY MEALs at first. I loved to pound Water with my meals. But weirdly, after reaching restriction, not a problem.

Good luck, angel!

Thank you for your support!! How many fills did it take not to feel that? Just curious. It sounds like things are going well for you. I'm looking forward to that feeling. I'm also looking forward to working out. I have a few more weeks to wait but I am ready to get started.

Thanks again! You're a gem!

It took 3 fills. The first was October 31st, so exactly a month. I wish they had warned me ahead of time to be patient and know that the weightloss phase can take awhile to hit. I didn't know about this forum and was feeling disappointed. typical of me to think, okay, the day after surgery I will be thin! LOL. So hang in there and know that if you have the thought, "This band isn't working! I wasted all this time and money!", that many others had the same experience, and then the right fill level hit and VOILA. It's not true anymore...

Hang in there - I am so excited for you.

I just want to add that I can't understand why someone who works specifically in the area of the treatment of obesity would be so rude. Don't let this discourage you! You are going to do great! From what I understand it could take several fills to be in the 'green zone'.

Sounds like your nurse is just rude and probably doesn't understand how hard it is to loose weight. My nurse said she was proud of me for only gaining 4 pounds between surgery and fill. They said it is very common for people to gain weight until they get their first fill. Don't worry about her attitude!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
