Post-Op Travel Question

Recommended Posts

I'm traveling abroad for the first time since surgery in a couple months and I'm trying to find out the best way to bring my Protein powder/shakes with me. Not sure packing a huge container or small baggies with Protein Powder is a great idea. Has anyone had this issue and found good ways to travel with your supplies?

I'm going to Italy in March so I asked my NUT the same thing she suggested I focus on hydration rather than Protein

She said most places in the world will offer some type of edible Protein (poultry, red meat, fish, tofu) so don't worry too much.

How far out from surgery will you be when traveling?

I suggest talking to your NUT to create a plan

Thanks for the info, I too will ask my NUT.

It's going to be a little over 3 months post surgery, so I'm not sure if they will suggest the same advice.

It will be four months for me, and they are really pushing eating instead of drinking most of my Proteins. Something about retraining the digestive track. TBH if I have a premier shake in addition to foods consumed I can reach about 90-100g Protein daily. So I will think I'll be OK without them for a bit.
Where are you going?

I'm flying to Paris then heading down to the south of France for 5 days. From there I'll be going to Amsterdam, Germany, and Belgium before returning back to Paris to fly home.

I'm just at the phase where I can start eating chicken, so I too am now having more editable Protein and then a premier shake.

Building up your tolerance to dense Proteins may be key. Sidenote: While in Paris I had the best salmon fillet at Le Victory off a side street near the Seine , I'm thinking about going back to Paris for a day or two during this trip

Will do! I've never been, so I'm sure I'll be trying a few different things on this trip.

Have fun on your trip! Can’t say I’m not jealous haha! Luckily we’ve booked 5 weeks off in August to go to Greece. I know if you just walk into a pharmacy or supplement store you can buy Protein powders. I’m not certain if the sell ready-made Protein Drinks.< br>My concern is how do I pack ALL my Vitamins I’ll need for 5 weeks without weighing down my suitcase? I might just order some vitamin patches for a lighter option

That's a great point about the Vitamins, I hadn't though of that. Last year I did a 12 day Disney cruise around the British Isles and was able to find a pill case for all my regular meds, but now after surgery and all the added pills that is a problem lol.

I thought that after this surgery I would have less daily pills to take, but now it seems I have twice as many.

Enjoy Greece, that may be next years trip.

Take a few portable items like Protein Bars or soft Jerky, but for when you are delayed in getting to restaurants or late traveling and you will find by the time of your trip you will be able to eat most Protein rich foods on the menu - esp fish. I just came from a 10 day cruise (I am out 4 months now) and had no issues - did not take shakes/powder, even for shore excursions. Have fun!

Great to hear.

Thank you for the advice.

I did a monthlong tour of SE Asia (Singapore; KL, Malaysia; Bangkok, Thailand; Hanoi, Vietnam) at 3 months post-op. I had no issues. I just kept to my Keto way of eating and there was meat and green vegetables anywhere that I went.

For the plane rides (and the long flight was 15+ hours from ATL-ISN), I took almonds, ParmCrisps, and some turkey Jerky. I was in business class, so the food was more or less accommodating (especially considering the limited quantities I could consume at that point). I also took ziploc bags so that I could hang on to some of the meat to eat a little bit later. (I had the flight attendant put some ice in another baggie for me to keep it coolish. They looked at me like I was insane, but they did it....) I also took an entire tub of Protein Powder in ziploc bags in my checked bag (with a little bit in smaller ziploc bags in my carryon).

All in all, it was pretty easy. I had to be very mindful of eating. But we always have to be mindful of eating.

Have a great time wherever your travels may take you!

My hubby and I went to Juarez, Mexico June 2016. I had never been on a trip out of the U.S.A. I brought some Water bottles and some redi-made Protien. When I went thru Customs they made me throw all of it away. Man, I could not believe it. I even had EX-RAYS with me showing the rods in my back. (my Dr told me 8 years ago) that they would set the alarm when I went thru. Of course they told me they didn't need them. (I threw them away one less thing for me to pack around) I know I could have made a fuss over our drinks but I didn't. I got my hubby some water because he was on his pre-op diet. I had to pay over $4.00 for water!! If that wasn't like being robbed I don't know what is. Sorry I get a little worked up!!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
