Pain while eating

Recommended Posts

So this is my first post. I have tried to look thru the other post but could not

find an answer.

I had the sleeve done on 1/9/18 so I am now 5 weeks post surgery.

I am in the soft food stage. But after I eat something within a few minutes its like

I feel it passing thru my stomach and it hurts.

Not a sharp pain, but more blunt and it passes as soon as it enters my stomach,

I am assuming is normal... I dont have a dr appt until the 26 Feb.

I am down a total of 45lbs since I started watching what I eat last september.

Thank you!!!

Possibly eating too fast? Too much volume wise?
My NUT told me to take a bite chew really good and go slow. After that bite, I would have to wait. Some things expand in your stomach. Also was told introduce 1 new food each day. This way if you have a food issue, you know what it is causing discomfort. Doesnt mean you cant have it ever again, he said to retry at 6 months. Hth

Make sure your bite size is small and you are eating slowly. I get pain if I eat too quickly, I’ve been a fast eater my whole life and that’s been the most difficult thing to change for me. I have to constantly remind myself to slow down and take those small bites.

I had my sleeve on the same day and have the same problem. I also had a hiatal hernia fixed at the same time as my sleeve and I am not sure if that is part of the problem. I did talk to my doctor about it and he told me that it could still be swelling from the surgery. Good luck, I hope it gets better for you!

Yeah Sheryl, I have to remind myself all the time! I used to eat like a pig! Also see how the food feels, give it a min or 2. I do this especially with something that can expand, even eating the whole wheat versions. For Pasta i eat about 1/4 forkful, I let it sit fir at least 5 min before taking the next bite. Why? When I have those type of foods, and it expands that you are over full and feel like crap, so that why I go super slow. Now remember everyone is different, but I am only able to eat 1 oz of steak and be full.

Got it. I know i have to figure out my limits. And it takes time. I am glad it sounds normal and not a medical problem. That is a relief

I was wondering if there would still be swelling after 5 weeks. I guess the body goes thru so much trauma it makes sense.

It takes approximately 6 months for your stomach to be healed completely. A great time to really develop good eating habits, eating slow, chewing well, etc.

I haven't had my surgery yet, I go for pre op next Thursday. But when going over eating after surgery my nutritionist said to use baby spoons as it would help from taking in to much at once. Has anyone tried that?

That’s a pretty good idea. Helps control the amount.

Sheryl, my surgery was 1/15/18. I just had my one month followup visit and I asked them the same thing. Both the dietician and Physician's Asst. told me the same thing. I was eating too fast. The size of bites all sleeve patients should be eating is a baby spoon size. Also, they said to wait 90 seconds to two minutes between bites. This helps prevent pain and also makes you feel fuller quicker.

What can you do to get rid of the pain/discomfort after eating to fast

I just have to sit and relax. My pain seems to subside pretty quickly.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
