My surgeon's office said I need at least one comorbidity for Medicare to cover my bariatric surgery. My PCP has put in a referral for me to have a sleep study done to see if I have sleep apnea. I do snore loudly every night (my boyfriend has to leave and sleep in another room), feel tired during the day, have trouble falling asleep, and am a light sleeper. It can take me up to 12 hours of being in bed to feel rested. I'm definitely not a morning person LOL. According to my Fitbit, when I sleep I spend 17% awake, 20% REM, 50% Light, and 13% Deep during my average of 7 hours of sleep. My PCP said it would be an at-home sleep study, and depending on the results I would go to a sleep lab for further testing. I've never done a sleep study. I hope my results will come back positive for sleep apnea so I can get bariatric surgery, and also find a solution to my poor sleep, snoring, and tiredness.

Has anyone here thought they had sleep apnea but your sleep study results came back negative for sleep apnea?

Please cross your fingers for me, this is my only shot at getting my insurance to cover my surgery.

I had very similar symptoms, and I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. You do the home test, then an overnight test at sleep center to determine pressure settings for an APAP machine. I've had my machine for 2 weeks now, and my average number of apneas has dropped from 65 to 8 per hour, and I feel so much more rested! So if you are diagnosed, don't panic! You and everyone in hearing range will sleep better :-)

I went to my first appointment with the cardiopulmonalogist today. She did an EKG and said it looked like one from a sleep study of a person experiencing sleep apnea even though I was awake. I'm going to have an echocardiogram next week and will get a sleep study soon.

I got my sleep study results back today. I have severe sleep apnea, 32 apneas per hour. I'm going to get a CPAP machine. I will also be able to get an appointment with the bariatric surgeon now that I meet my insurance requirements.

Good, and keep in mind that there is a good chance we will be off the CPAP machine once we lose weight. :)

I had to have a sleep study because both my parents have sleep apnea and my doctor wants to make sure that if I do have it, it’s controlled bore surgery.

I got my results Friday and it was completely normal. There’s other comorbidities that may apply. If they have find GERD during your endoscopy (like me), or something in your blood work comes back abnormal, high blood pressure, gallstones, the list goes on. Bariatric centers can help you find a comorbidity.

I have a CPAP machine now. Been using it for a couple of days. Getting better sleep than I've had in years.

I'm supposed to hear back from the surgeon's office tomorrow to get an appointment.

Following surgery 6 days ago, I've had some interesting apnea results: 90% pressure has dropped in half (from 16-20 to 10), and AHI has dropped from the upper teens to 1-3. ????? This isn't from losing weight or pain meds (stopped those on day 3), but could repairing a medium-large hiatal hernia cause this effect?

i had a sleep study done, but only have sleep apena on my back. The doctor said it's so mild that it's not even really considered sleep apena. You need a minimum of 5 events an hour to have "sleep apnea," and I had 4 events an hour, but ONLY when I was on my back. She said position therapy would help and that I didn't need a CPAP, and that after the sleeve and losing weight it would go away.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
