I do not usually post. I wanted to see how others deal with stress eating post surgery. I am watching my calories and not eating junk food, but it is a struggle when under stress. How do you handle the temptations when under stress?

Go for a walk. Call a friend. Listen to music. Do some yoga (YouTube has some vids for beginners). Go be by yourself somewhere to clear your head. Clean something. Keep your hands busy.

Your stomach is smaller now. Even if you're not eating junk food, you can't turn to food and eat away the problems. Besides, it never really helped you anyway, right? Remember those feelings of guilt and failure after a binge? It just creates more stress in the end.

If I am stressed, and want to eat - Itry distraction of course, but if that doesn’t work, I eat a sardine. Yep, a sardine out of a can (sardines in oil - blot the oil off, but sardines in spring Water are too dry for me). That fills me up til mealtime - and I take it off my next meal allowance.

Works a treat!

I have noticed this is a tough thing to deal with. Honestly, now that I cannot comfort myself with food sometimes I am forced to deal with the stress by crying. My job is super stressful and now instead of coming home and eating empty carbs I might have a little sniffle. At first I wondered what the hell was the matter with me but then I realized what was going on. I’m not really craving the food that used to comfort me, so these emotions are coming out in other ways. Not sure if it’s normal but there it is.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
