Travelling the Americas after VSG

Recommended Posts

So, was sleeved 3 weeks ago today, spent time recovering and now continuing my journey through central/South America.

Finding it hard to locate good food sources, as Greek yogurt not common, and a lot of meals are based around maize and Beans etc.

In terms of eating I’m managing 1 scrambled egg for Breakfast (takes a good 30mins to get it down) and drinking lots of Water, but worried I’m not getting enough Protein.

Have tried pharmacies for protein and Protein Bars but all seem to carry a lot higher sugar and carb content than I’ve been used to and am allowed.

Anyone else been travelling straight after surgery? Any ideas?

Also still have wicked pain and bruising from major incision site - is that normal after 3 weeks? I would have thought it would have eased up by now. Every other site including drain site is healed and fine.

Thanks.

My suggestion, for what it's worth, is maybe to order Protein Shakes if you will be in one place long enough to wait for delivery. I also don't know whether you have a way to puree something (like beef or chicken soup)? Can you find broth? Cottage cheese?

I’ve been hunting for cottage cheese but no luck yet. Only cream cheese, which is tempting but I do seem to get affected by dumping! I had a Protein Bar the other day which unknown when I bought it had chocolate around the base. Not much, just drizzled. Less than 30 minutes late had full cramping, pain, cold sweats, dizzy, nauseated. Felt like the worst case of food poisoning ever! Thank god for public toilets!
Pleasing in a way to know that chocolate won’t be an option in the future! Not going through that again!

I would stick with egg, chicken and fish. Beans are a source of Protein.

can you boil eggs and keep some in your bag for later in the day?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
