Weight loss stops after a year?

My surgeon has told me that the weight loss stops one year after surgery. That for some reason, something happens after 12 months and the weight will no longer slide off. When I asked why this happened, he said they didn't know but that was the clinic's experience.

As we know, the sleeve works in multiple ways, (1) it reduces the stomach's capacity, (2) the hunger hormone Ghrelin is reduced by 50-65% because the part of the stomach that is rich in the cells that makes the hormone is removed; and (3) the way certain foods are handled by the digestive track changes, so people's tastes for certain foods changes helping you to adopt healthier eating.

I'm wondering if these things all change around 12 months?

I'm nearly six months out (it has gone by so quickly) and I feel like I have this six month deadline to reach goal before the sleeve "magic" stops!!

Has anyone else heard anything about this 12 month milestone? Anyone more than a year out notice anything changes around this time? You can still lose weight right? Is it just harder?

Hey bud

I was operated 14/01/17 so just over the 1 year mark, I started at 132kg and down to 74.5kg, the quantity restrictions are still there just not as small as when you first start so more socially acceptable amounts lol, the hunger pains which were my problem before surgery are still epic I eat because it is a meal time not because I am starving! And don’t snack anymore

The weight loss is slowing down but the magic certainly hasn’t stop, you just need to make sure you don’t slip into any bad habits as it is the year mark where you will see if you have made the correct lift style choices for the future.

I actually enjoy the gym now and my life has been give back to me!!

I've read it takes the body and metabolism 18 months to adjust to the surgery. That's when u want to get down to your goal weight. Then it's all about maintenance. I'm 4 mos post op and I know the feeling of wanting to hit the goal before the body adjusts. So I'm looking at it like I have 14 mos to lose another 50 lbs. Establish good habits and get my gym routine down

Thanks, it's good to hear from a veteran. I imagine the weight loss has to slow down because you've already lost so much weight. I guess it could be a matter of slipping back into bad habits, but I hope that doesn't happen to me. I still have so much weight to lose.

You have done so well! You are such an inspiration. Do you find maintenance easier or harder than it was the lose the weight?

Yes I took a couple trips and definately wasn't eating as healthy as I should be... luckily I'm a gym addict so that has helped but starting Monday I'm cleaning my act up completely. I got another 50 lbs till my goal weight of 170... I ate like **** during mos 2 and 3 post op. Not the whole time but enough to slow my progress to a slow crawl.. very disappointing.. the vacations were great tho. But I'm putting everything off now till I make significant gains towards my goals. Good luck. It's a process of ups and downs so far for me

I wish I could be a gym rat. I asked my nutritionist and bariatric psychologist what the best indicator was for a patient's long term success. They both said it's when the patient takes up exercise and enjoys it.

Yea i always have been since high school.. my problem is I'm a (was) a binge eater.. and when I would eat the way I did and take a month off from the gym it quickly ballooned me up. U have to find something physical u enjoy doing if u want too be successful long term. Anything, start with walking and move up to speed walking then jogging... biking... but an elliptical... swimming... u have to find something u enjoy

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
