Do people treat you different now that you're skinny?

Recommended Posts

I am not skinny yet and am still at the beginning of my weight loss journey. Having said that...I don't really get mean comments anymore once I was able to put more effort in my appearance. Once I started earning my own money, I moved out of my home country (where clothing only comes in sizes S, M, and L) to another country where clothing comes in sizes 0-20 and shoes come in size 42. I'm always skimming at the top but I am still able to find great options that actually *fit* rather than just something I can fit into.

I also enjoy taking care of my appearance (hair salon, mani-pedi, makeup) so I look like some fashionista, only fatter (if I may say so myself). In my experience, I have people open doors for me (some were even cute guys!), strangers struck up a conversation, etc and I have stopped thinking that it's all got to do with me. How people treat you is a reflection of themselves. I've had people open the door for me even when I didn't feel particularly beautiful / made any effort that day so, some people are just nice / respectful, and some are jerks.

However, I do feel the difference when I put on some effort in my appearance and when I don't. People treat you with more respect when you do but I guess the same applies to regular-sized people as well, and I think because when you put some effort you feel more confidence and less sensitive to perceived slights from other people.

I am, however, very interested to know if I'll experience these changes in treatment from stranger that others mentioned.

I would not define myself as skinny, but I have lost 160 pounds and weigh about 160 pounds. People definitely treat me differently, and almost every situation. I am included more in social activities, and frequently told that I am beautiful. I have come to be known in my community has a bit of a party girl, because I am always dancing and smiling. I'll admit that I am also different and more ways than just the shape and size of my body. I hold myself differently. I am happier. I feel better physically. But I have no doubt that the reduction in the size of my body has made a huge effect on how other people perceive me.

I'm told guys develop elevator eyes, where they stand there looking you up and down and up and down. Hasn't happened to me but then I'm still built like a freight elevator at this point.

I am still a bit clueless about gestures from the oposite sex..lol some of the guys here have been great to help me interpret men.

I had to look up the makeing it rain gesture..lol

Comments on your new apearance takes an adjustment. Some will be appropriate, hilarious and creepy.

I actually experienced reverse discrimination. I went into the store where I had always shopped where I could buy my size 26 and the saleswoman came up to me and was quite rude and basically told me to leave until I told her I was there for someone else, I couldn’t believe it.

I shopped at DXL when I was heavy, and because I spent so much, I got free coupons pretty often. Long before goal (I'd say I probably weighed about 225ish at the time), I went in with a $25 coupon. Now, I knew that there were no clothes there to fit me anymore, but I was going to get socks with it (even though socks came up to my knees lol). The ladies that had taken care of me for years were actually standoffish bordering on rude. I expected them to be happy for me, but they certainly weren't...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
