Pre-Op Journey Fears

Recommended Posts

Hey all! I'm just starting my Pre Op journey. I meant with my PCP last week, had blood work and eval with PT this morning and meet the dietician next week. Already talked to my insurance and the clinic and I have to do a 6 month medically supervised plan before getting approval. My BMI is 43.39 and I am starting to have issues, hence why I had the talk with my PCP, and want to take a stand before it gets higher. All other efforts on my own just see the scale going higher and higher. I have so many fears right now, not wanting to tell people because I get the "you can do it on your own " (obviously I can't lol) or just the judgemental looks. But I have this fear that I will go through the 6 months and loose just enough to put me outside that window of qualifying but still be over weight. Has anyone ever had this fear?

No never. ;) lol. You should go read my blog here.

Do you have co-morbidities that are recognized by your insurance? Does your surgeon have any weight loss rules for their patents? I had to lose 5% of my weight. When I met her I was 256 and am now at 227, 6 days into my liquid pre-op 2 week countdown.

It's a roller coaster journey. But you seriously have to know what your rules are on the BMI thing or that could legitimately happen to you.

I talked to the clinic and she said I have to do my 6 months, then go to a seminar and two support meetings before getting the first consult with the surgeon. Then he will order more tests depending on medical history. The BMI ranges fell right in line with what the insurance said. My PCP is currently testing me for other co-morbidities at the next appointment on 3/2

Yeah I think it's a common one, we've ALL heard "you need t o exercise more, push yourself away from the table" and one of my personal favorites." You're not trying". Walk in my stretched out shoes a little ways. My PCP put me on a weightloss drug last October, I GAINED weight. He agreed with what i had been saying -'I needed Bariatric surgery, wrote a letter of recommendation for me to give to my surgeon at the first visit. He is still one of my biggest supporters on my weight loss journey, wants to,be kept updated. I will be having a RnY early-mid March at Mount Carmel in Columbus Ohio at the tender age of 72. But I'm going to make a success of tjis, it is my last best hope for the future.

Age is but a number...good for you!!! I tried meds a few years ago (wish I was that "over weight" again lol) and it sent me to the hospital by ambulance because my heart was racing so much. I have super fit sisters and I hinted at my plans to one of them and just got a hmmmmm... well, I'm doing this for me not them! And I honestly can't wait to be smaller so I can do 5ks with them, and ride my bike with my kids or run with the dog or do anything without pain. I want to free the skinny chick inside, to make my reflection match who I actually feel like! :)

I had my EGD this morning. I have a hernia and they removed a polyp to be sent off to be tested. I should receive results in 7-10 days. Now all I am waiting for is approval from Insurance. Fingers crossed it will not be too long.
I am 5’2” and weigh 260. This is my heaviest. I have been over 200 for 28 yrs since the birth of my first child.
Need that push start to get me on my way.

Hi I'm new here. I've considering VSG for about 1.5 years. I heard it all.. from my GP doctor (just changed doctors, yay) she'd say.. will power is what you NEED. i think i'm finally finding a support network. But, I'm nervous and hopeful all at the same time. I feel like I am in the closet about this.. i've not told my family or closest friends. the inner voice 'what if I fail..." fear, etc.

It helps to know I'm not the only one. This is week one for my 12 month jumping thru hoops for BCBS. It's looking like a long journey.. one i need to make, but there's this impatient thing... :-)

Stay strong.. saying that somehow makes me feel better.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
