nervous about forms

Recommended Posts

I'm SO nervous about my first consult with the surgeon tomorrow. Especially with this form I'm having to fill out: "Why do you think you failed with other diet programs?" I dunno! Lack of self control, loss of motivation. Whats the answer he is looking for? Is there a right one? IS THERE A WRONG ONE? Why is this freaking me out so much?!

I got my packet in today, and I agree it’s a lot of paperwork!

What the hell is this package? LOL! I have my final next week with the doc. When I first entered the program I had a crap ton of paperwork to fill out asking questions similar to that, though.

Honestly, my surgeon didn’t even look at my packet during my consult. We just talked. We went over my history with weight, the different procedures. I have PCOS and I told him I’ve heard the sleeve was a good solution. When he told me it was the only permanent solution, I was sold. He told me I’d be a great candidate and then handed me off to a patient liason who filled me in on the requirements for my insurance and surgeon.

Well, if you need a psych eval, they're going to probably ask the same question. I don't think there is a wrong answer, unless you're obese because someone forces it down your throat and you are afraid to leave them, or something bizarre like that. Just be honest, and it's OK if you're not totally sure, or if there are several reasons. And, it's a legit question, but the answer might not out unless you talk with someone about it. Do you stress eat? Celebrate with food? Have 5 glasses of wine per night? A good practice will help you understand why you failed before, so you don't do it again. Best of luck!

Those forms were so crazy! Mine was like 12 pages long. There is no right or wrong answer - but the answers might help them guide you with which surgery is best for you and will certainly help YOU after surgery to stay successful. For example, I am a binge eater and I tended to binge on carbs/sweets. So my surgeon felt that the RnY would be a better option for me. And, post surgery, even though I have the tools to help avoid the binge eating and sweets I am still very mindful of those behaviors. My bariatric program can also use that information to provide me with therapy and support for my specific situation.

Thank you everyone for your responses! I'm so glad I found this forum for support and gathering real life experiences. I appreciate it so much!

Many of you were correct, the surgeon didn't even read the forms, they were for insurance purposes. We just sat and talked about why I was ready to take the surgery route and whether it was the right decision for me. So far so good, have EGD, gallbladder sonograms, EKGs and labs scheduled for April. Making plans for the psych consult and pre op class I have to take. Looking at a mid July surgery date! I hope it goes faster than it feels right now!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
