Surgery date of March 12

Recommended Posts

Finally, after a long journey and lots of ups and downs, I will be going to have gastric bypass on March 12th. The pre-op Optifast diet begins on February 26th. We thought I was going to be able to have the surgery in February and that will not happen but March 12th is only a blink in the eye of time. I began the entire affair in September of 2017. Between the doctors appointments and the fight to get my blood sugar, I am tired and elated that the time is almost here. A new beginning ....

Admittedly, I am not jumping for joy over the liquid diet phase but I understand that it is a medical necessity so I'll grin it and bare it. Speaking of surgery, @FluffyChix, yours is right around the corner in no time at all. How are you feeling?

I hear ya! It's def a necessary evil! hehe! I'm getting super excited and more than a little scared. I guess part of me doesn't think it's gonna really happen. You know? Like they'll find something in pre-surg, or my insurance will tell the hospital j/k! She's not approved. Or lastly, that the doc will go in and come back out saying, nope, not gonna...lol. You know? I'm a little afraid to hope.

Do you have any of those thoughts?

Definitely had same thoughts (but not about insurance because I’m in Canada and it’s a little different here). Thought they’d go in and discover that the Opti hadn’t shrunk the fat around the liver enough or something like that. But all is done now and so far I’ve been lucky (although feeling a little nauseous right now)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
