Discouraged. Slipped band.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I had my lap band surgery in Dec of 2011. I lost 75 pounds with only 1 fill. I never needed another fill because I was really content with my weight (although not at goal). Last summer, I started having heartburn for the first time since I got my lap band. I had an EGD and everything was fine. I didn't know my dr wouldn't be able to diagnose a slipped band that way. After my EGD, I noticed all of a sudden that I am always starving! I finally made the trip to my surgeon. He diagnosed me with a slipped band & emptied my band (5cc). I'm supposed to do liquids for a week, mushies for a week, regular diet for a week and then recheck my band. Long story short, the last 6 days have been one long binge. I can eat all the things I haven't been able to! I can eat all my feelings!

I need to start all liquids. It's so hard to starve! Knowing I can eat all the things I've craved for so long!

Can my band be saved? I was hoping to try to get pregnant late this summer. Will morning sickness cause another slip?

I am totally discouraged.

First thing you have to do is stop the binging. Are you able to take time off work? That may help with doing the liquid diet. If you're able to lay around your house and not have to worry about anything it'll be easier to stick it out.

If you want to save your band, I strongly advise you listen to your doctor. Remind yourself that it's just a week.

I'm sure it feels good to binge but it's self-destructive behavior.

Go to the store, stock up on Protein Shakes, broths, and yogurt smoothies and tough it out for 7 days. Then move on to mushies, and then try to eat your lap band diet the next week, and then see your doctor.

Otherwise you're just going to go back to the way you were before. It's unfortunate for us but once you're obese your body will do whatever it takes to get that fat back. It's not a matter of pure willpower. That's why we needed help in the first place. But you can do 7 days. That's all it is. Just a week. Take it day by day and you'll get through it.

Please stop binging! It's not going to help you at all. Perhaps you will consider a revision to a sleeve or bypass.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
